Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes Of Grindelwald May Have Revealed A Big Plot Twist In Its Trailer
Possible spoilers ahead for Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald.
It's an exciting time to be a Harry Potter fan. In addition to the upcoming Broadway play and mobile game, the Fantastic Beasts franchise is in full swing. The first film helped to expand J.K. Rowling's Wizarding World, and did the world building to necessitate four more sequels revolving around Newt Scamander. As such, anticipation for Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald has been at a fever pitch, especially when the first trailer arrived just days ago. Since the fandom is so rabid, every frame of the trailer has been dissected for context and clues about the film's plot-- and one shot may have revealed a major spoiler. The shot in question is below, which features the Lestrange family tree.
On the right side of the mysterious character (Dumbledore?), one can see Credence Barebone's name. That character, played by Ezra Miller, was both the victim and the villain of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. He's been set to appear in The Crimes of Grindelwald, and has been teased as a more significant character in the Wizarding World than we even realize. Did the trailer accidentally reveal that he's actually from the Estrange blood line, and is therefore related to the likes of Bellatrix and Sirius Black?
Narratively, it would stand to reason that poor Credence was actually a member of the Lestrange family. In Fantastic Beasts, we learned that the character was actually adopted by his mother, the abusive anti-magic Mary Lou Barebone. We haven't been privy to the character's biological family, but the darkness and power that within the Obscurial could indicate that he's a member of the dark wizarding family.
While Ezra Miller's character was overwhelmed with the dark power inside of him, he wasn't an all out villain in the first film. But if Credence ends up linking up with other dark wizards in his family, he may never be redeemable again. He's already the oldest living Obscurial in Wizarding history, so he's clearly got some serious power. The Lestranges would no doubt help him harness it, although there will be consequences regarding his final shreds of humanity.
Credence is only briefly seen in the first trailer for Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, so it's unclear exactly how he'll factor into the narrative of the highly anticipated sequel. The overall plot Crimes of Grindelwald is a mystery, and there should be more information as we get closer to its release.
