The Thanos Subreddit Is Hilariously About To Ban Half Its Users
Every villain is the hero of their own story, and that's very true when it comes to Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War. Some fans are so sure Thanos was right they're going to symbolically support him by banning half the users of their own Reddit thread. Members of the r/thanosdidnothingwrong thread on Reddit will have one advantage over their counterparts, however, as they know death is coming. It's just a question of which half of the thread will be randomly banned come July 9.
Apparently, the feeling is that the r/thanosdidnothingwrong Reddit must have become too large and has grown beyond its resources, as it was announced yesterday that half the thread is being randomly banned on Monday. A bot is being designed for the purpose and will be unleashed on the masses and will apparently truly be banning half its users. There doesn't seem to be any real purpose behind this beyond the fact that it's a Reddit dedicated to Thanos, and they know he would approve.
An attempt to make this mass ban has been in the works for a little while and was hoping to take place prior to the 4th of July holiday, but apparently, admins at Reddit asked them not to do it then because engineers would be less available due to the holiday. A bot that mass bans 50% of a thread's users isn't exactly common, and there's always the chance that making the ban could cause things to go haywire. Currently, the thread has 341,000 subscribers, though that number has gone up significantly since news of this mass ban has become widespread. That's a lot of people that will get banned on Monday. There's certainly the possibility that the loss of "life" could have repercussions throughout the (Reddit) universe. There seems to a legitimate belief by some that the ban could crash Reddit as a whole.
The news of this mass banning is growing so it's possible a lot more people will be joining the thread right before the ban just to get in on the fun. On the other hand, there do seem to be some people considering unsubscribing before the ban and resubscribing afterward to avoid being locked out. Certainly, anybody who does that doesn't really think Thanos was right.
The users are really getting into this. There's a thread dedicated to people who have promised to do certain things if they survive, including at least one user who has promised to get a Thanos tattoo.
The ban, in proper Thanos fashion, will be complete and fair, even mods are potentially on the chopping block. It will be interesting to see what happens on Monday when the ban happens. Maybe next year a group of heroic Reddit engineers will arrive an un-ban everybody who gets the ax next week.
