Wonder Woman 1984 Created A Cool Tribute To The Breakfast Club
For the follow-up to the DCEU's most widely loved film, director Patty Jenkins is taking Diana of Themyscira out of World War I and jumping ahead almost 70 years in Wonder Woman 1984. As Wonder Woman enters that most nostalgic of decades, it is only right to acknowledge the iconic and influential films that defined that era. To that end, the stars of Wonder Woman 1984 and director Patty Jenkins created a cool tribute to the 1985 John Hughes classic, The Breakfast Club. Take a look:
This image, originally posted on Pedro Pascal's Instagram, but since deleted, is a great way to get us even more hyped for the amazing pairing of Wonder Woman and the '80s. Beyond just honoring a great movie, the fun thing in this tribute is seeing who from Wonder Woman 1984 is which member of The Breakfast Club. Gal Gadot's Wonder Woman is the princess, Claire, naturally. Director Patty Jenkins is the criminal John Bender, which is a fun touch. Pedro Pascal, whose character in Wonder Woman 1984 remains a mystery, gets the role of the athlete, Andrew, played by Emilio Estevez. Perhaps most perfect is Kristen Wiig as the basket case Allison, which seems highly appropriate for the actress who is playing Cheetah in Wonder Woman 1984. Last is Chris Pine as the geeky brain Brian. You can see the original Breakfast Club below to see how the tribute compares:
While this is just a fun tribute, I'm not sure how much Wonder Woman 1984 will have in common with The Breakfast Club plot-wise. Although I suspect being bad will feel pretty good for the villains, and maybe somebody will say "Eat my shorts." However, it does look like the movie will be fully embracing its eighties-ness. The first footage from the film shown at San Diego Comic-Con earlier this summer showed an action scene at a shopping mall, giving us what was denied in X-Men: Apocalypse. Given the love for '80s nostalgia these days, leaning into that sounds like a fun idea, and I can't wait to see how the Themysciran and a possibly out of time Steve Trevor adapt to the colorful decade.
Speaking of Steve Trevor, the first image of Chris Pine from the film showed him decked out in the fashion of the era, so Wonder Woman with crimped hair is probably next. Of course, we still don't know how Steve Trevor is even alive, much less in 1984. He may need some of Brian Johnson's smarts to figure it out.
