Why Dakota Johnson Needed Therapy After Filming Suspiria

Previews suggest that there are a ton of great movies set to come out between now and the end of the year, but none look as trippy, eerie, and disturbing as Luca Guadagnino's Suspiria. We won't know until November if it will actually live up to that promise, but certainly one person deeply affected by it is star Dakota Johnson - who recently explained why her experience playing Susie Bannion saw her seek the help of a mental professional after production:

I find sometimes when I work on a project and --- I don't have any shame in this --- I'm a very porous person and I absorb a lot of people's feelings. When you're working sometimes with dark subject matter, it can stay with you, and then to talk to somebody really nice about it afterwards is a really nice way to move on from the project. My therapist is a really nice woman.

Dakota Johnson first revealed that he specifically entered therapy following the making of Suspiria earlier this year, but it was only during a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly that she explained the full story. It seems that her character work and the tone and themes of the film wound up being a little too intense for her due to her emotional filters, and as a result she felt the need to talk out her feelings with a third party.

This is interesting to learn if not just for the perspective it offers on the craft. There are plenty of actors who have the ability to completely mentally compartmentalize the work, go home at night disconnecting from their role - but others, like Dakota Johnson, aren't able to do that as easily. As a result, it can clearly be affecting for the performer, opening them up to thoughts and realities they might not have otherwise explored. Clearly this happened to Johnson in the making of Suspiria, and I'll admit to it making me extra curious to see what kind of heat the film is packing.

A remake of the Dario Argento classic, Suspiria begins as a young American woman (Dakota Johnson) moves to Berlin to enroll in an exclusive dance academy. She begins to discover, however, that the benefits of the experience may not be enough to compensate for the number of strange and horrific occurrences that begin to happen with greater and greater frequency. The film, which has a stacked cast including Chloe Moretz, Tilda Swinton, and Jessica Harper, just premiered at the Venice Film Festival where it received a polarized response - so we'll just have to wait and see how mass audiences receive it.

Amazon Studios is releasing Suspiria domestically, and is set to give it a limited release on October 26 followed by a nationwide expansion on November 2nd. Be on the lookout here on CinemaBlend for more updates about the film, and to see what else is coming soon to a theater near you, be sure to check out our release calendar.

Is Avengers 4's First Trailer Coming This Month?

By  at March 30, 2021  , , ,  No comments
Is Avengers 4's First Trailer Coming This Month?

Last year, Marvel fans were going crazy in the wait for the Avengers: Infinity War trailer. Now destiny has repeated itself with the trailer for Avengers 4. Fans are clamoring to find out the date the trailer will release, and there are no shortage of rumors regarding when that will be. Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige has said that it will release this year, but now one Marvel fan site claims to have narrowed down the release window to later this month.

According to MCU Cosmic, the trailer for Avengers 4 (which may be called Avengers: Annihilation) will release before the end of November. The site doesn't claim to know an exact date to expect the trailer, but it does lay down some ideas. The Infinity War trailer released on November 29, 2017, so a similar target area could be in store for Avengers 4, should Disney stick to a similar release schedule. The trailer will likely debut online first (which is often the case these days), or it will premiere on TV during Good Morning America or a football game.

For those who may not know, Disney owns ABC, the channel that airs Good Morning America, and the studio has used the morning news show to debut footage or new details for its movies. For example, the Captain Marvel trailer premiered on Good Morning America, so it's not farfetched to say the same could happen with Avengers 4.

MCU Cosmic goes on to say that it has heard from "reliable sources" there's a high likelihood that the trailer will debut during a football game between November 26 and December 2. Previously, Star Wars trailers have debuted during football games -- giving huge ratings boosts to the games. There are no more Star Wars movies until next year, so there's reason to believe that the NFL would want that Avengers 4 trailer.

My advice would be to take any rumor about Avengers 4 with a healthy dosage of salt. A lot of people on the internet are claiming to have the inside scoop, and while this site has logical reasoning behind its claims, none of it is confirmed. So, we'll have to keep waiting until Marvel or the Russo Brothers finally take pity on us poor souls and drop that freakin' trailer already.

There's no release date for a trailer, but I can tell you when Avengers 4 will come out! The highly anticipated blockbuster will premiere on May 3, 2019 (though, there are rumors that's not even the release date anymore). To learn everything you can until then, here's what you need to know about Avengers 4. For everything else coming down the Marvel pipeline, here's our Marvel movie release guide.

Shazam! Director Clarifies Why The Movie Needed Reshoots

Shazam! Director Clarifies Why The Movie Needed Reshoots

Superhero movies may have become commonplace, but DC's live-action universe has had a particularly fascinating road to theaters. Tons of projects have been announced over the past few years, although quite a few have also been cancelled in the process. But there are a handful heading to theaters, starting with Aquaman and Shazam! The latter is about to head into reshoots, with some fans worrying about what might be altered.

Reshoots have become almost a curse word for DC fans, as they plagued Justice League and resulted in the film's lackluster final product. Rumors indicated Shazam! reshoots happening for a variety of reasons, and now director David F. Sandberg has addressed them directly, saying:

All normal stuff. No changing the tone, removing DC references or whatever else theories are out there.

Well, that seems pretty cut and dry. Hearing fans' concerns about the Shazam! reshoots, David F. Sandberg laid out what's being worked on now that production has started back up. More specifically, he detailed what definitely was NOT being adjusted for his upcoming DC blockbuster.

David F. Sandberg's Shazam! update comes from his Twitter, where the filmmaker regular communicates directly with the fandom. Shazam! is a major gig for Sandberg, with his movie able to reach a massive audience due to the popularity of the genre. As such, he's often fielding questions from moviegoers about the DC movie.

Moviegoers' feelings toward reshoots is somewhat fascinating, as the new obsession begun just in the last few years. Blockbusters have absolutely massive budgets, so reshoots are usually worked into the schedule from the jump. But after seeing a few movies drastically changed due to these type of reshoots, the fandom has some trepidation when it comes to additional filming.

This is especially true for DC fans, given how Justice League turned out. Director Zack Snyder departed the project in the wake of a family tragedy, with The Avengers and Buffy director Joss Whedon completing the film. But in the wake of Batman v Superman's lukewarm critical reaction, Whedon reportedly tried to lighten the tone with his expensive reshoots, and the blockbuster was a frankenstein film when it finally arrived in theaters.

Anticipation for Shazam! was pretty steady, but it really picked up once the first trailer debuted during San Diego Comic-Con. It showed a fun, youthful tone unique to the superhero genre, and fans are eager to see more footage as the movie approaches theaters. From David F. Sandberg's comments, it seems like nothing unexpected has popped up to change in Shazam!, and the new footage will simply help bring the upcoming movie together in a cohesive way.

Shazam! will arrive in theaters on April 5, 2019. In the meantime, check out our 2019 release list to plan your next trip to the movies.
