Jada Pinkett Smith Reveals Why She Didnt Originally Want To Star Opposite Will Smith In Ali

Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith have been married for 20 years, and in that time the two have enjoyed successful Hollywood careers, both as actors and as producing partners. Yet the two have rarely shared the screen together, the notable exception being when the real-life couple played husband and wife in the 2001 biopic Ali. Will Smith played the titular boxing legend Muhammad Ali and Jada Pinkett Smith played his first wife, Sonji Roi. Although playing married characters might seem like an easy transition, Jada Pinkett Smith originally didn't want to star opposite her real-life husband, as she explained:

I didn't want to audition for this. I did not want to be in this movie with Will. I felt like because we were a couple off screen, for people to see us together on the screen in a movie like this, would take people out of the movie, that people would see Will and Jada there --- they wouldn't see Ali and Sonji.

With what celebrity culture is and how much focus there is on celebrity couples, you can definitely see how Jada Pinkett Smith might be apprehensive about starring in Ali opposite her husband. The thought being that some audiences might see the couple that appears in tabloids and on red carpets, and thus not get as immersed in the film as they otherwise would. This might be true for any movie, but I imagine it was especially true for a movie like Ali that is about real people. There is a desire on the part of the actors, in this case Jada Pinkett Smith, to be respectful and do justice to that story and those people, and part of that is keeping the focus on the characters and not the stars playing them.

Jada Pinkett Smith further elaborated to People's Couch Surfing that in addition to not wanting to be in Ali with her husband, she didn't even think that director Michael Mann would really want her for the role of Sonji Roi. Perhaps she thought he didn't like her for the part or perhaps she thought that he shared the same concerns about having a real-life couple onscreen together, but she thought wrong. Jada Pinkett Smith auditioned and Michael Mann wanted her for the part. He basically wouldn't take no for an answer, so she trusted him and took on the role opposite her husband.

It all worked out fairly well too, as Ali netted Will Smith a Best Actor Oscar nomination for his performance. And while the film is perhaps not as great as the boxer himself, I don't think the husband and wife acting duo took people out of the film. That is one hallmark of a good actor and a good film, making the audience forget that you are just playing a part and that you have a life outside the silver screen.

Will Smith next takes on the iconic role of the Genie in Disney's live-action remake of Aladdin on May 24, 2019. Jada Pinkett Smith will appear in the Olympus Has Fallen sequel Angel Has Fallen, which is also arriving sometime next year. The Clues In Avengers: Infinity War That Point To Thanos Defeat In Avengers 4

The Clues In Avengers: Infinity War That Point To Thanos Defeat In Avengers 4

Earlier this summer, Thanos (Josh Brolin) laid to waste half of the Marvel Cinematic Universe with the snap of his fingers -- one that was wearing an Infinity Gauntlet, mind you -- and ended Joe and Anthony Russo's Avengers: Infinity War on an unprecedented, downbeat ending. The villain prevailed. That never happens. We assume that Thanos' victory over the Avengers will be temporary -- likely resolved in Avengers 4 (which still doesn't have an official title). But HOW can the Mad Titan be bested? Let's venture down the rabbit hole and investigate a few clues that we picked up from the commentary track for Avengers: Infinity War.

For starters, the theory that Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) witnessed the one path to victory was confirmed by co-writer Christopher Markus, who was discussing Stephen Strange's powers in the MCU and elaborated:

He generally comes off as the adult in the room. Very reassuring. And that, regardless of what happens over the course of the movie, I think Strange might know how this is going to work out. I have faith in him.

So, too, do we now. We always assumed that Doctor Strange turning over the Time Stone to Thanos in an effort to save Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) meant that Iron Man was essential to the one route to victory that the remaining heroes might have. This means that yes, there IS a chance at a win. There is a possible way for the Avengers to prevail over Thanos. But while the Titan has the Infinity Gauntlet, he might be unstoppable.

Except, the Gauntlet is probably damaged after the snap.

When you fast-forward to that moment in the film, Joe Russo comments on the sizzled weapon that's on Thanos' mitt, and states:

See there, with the Gauntlet and his arm... the power that it takes to use all six stones is significant, and it clearly damaged the Gauntlet. And damaged Thanos permanently.

That got me thinking. Is there another being in the MCU strong enough to wield a Gauntlet that has all six Infinity Stones? Hulk, maybe, but he's intimidated by Thanos at the moment. Thor, potentially. But really, I think the comment by Joe Russo was a set up to the introduction of a hero who we KNOW is going to be the mightiest power that the MCU has ever seen: Captain Marvel.

Things don't happen in the Marvel Cinematic Universe by accident. There's a reason that Captain Marvel's origin movie arrives between Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers 4. We will meet Carol Danvers (Brie Larson), be introduced to her powers and her skill set, and likely deliver on the tease in the end credits of Infinity War, when Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) called Carol on a strange device. Assuming Carol is in Avengers 4, she seems like the hero who is powerful enough to wield a Gauntlet and stop Thanos' reign.

And where is there another, undamaged Gauntlet? Well, we saw one on Nidavellir when Thor, Rocket and Groot arrived to speak with Eitri (Peter Dinklage). Again, that was no accident.

My best guess? These clues dropped into the commentary track of Avengers: Infinity War set up a means for the Avengers to get their revenge on Thanos. They have a second Gauntlet waiting for them on Nidavellir. And they're about to meet a superhero powerful enough to wield such a weapon. It will require the remaining heroes to retrieve the Stones. And it might lead to a reunion in the place where I "think" the dusted Avengers are waiting: Inside the Soul Stone.

After he uses the Gauntlet, Thanos immediately arrives into a scene with young Gamora. On the commentary track for this scene. Joe Russo explains that this is Soul World, confirming:

Thanos is transported, through the power that was needed to wipe out half of the life in the universe, into this dream state inside the Soul Stone. He was allowed one last meeting with that which he gave up to get there. The spiritual representation of his daughter.

There's a theme throughout Infinity War (available now on Blu-ray) that's important to note. "We don't trade lives." Captain America (Chris Evans) swears by it. Vision (Paul Bettany) playfully tosses it back at Cap. And yet, after the snap, every member of the MCU that's left has traded a life that is invaluable to them. Cap loses Bucky. Okoye loses T'Challa. Rocket loses Groot. And in the most painful, Tony Stark loses Peter Parker (Tom Holland). Are they all waiting in the Soul Stone? Will the surviving members sacrifice themselves to bring these heroes back?

Avengers 4 really can't get here quick enough.

What We Know About Ivan Drago's Return In Creed 2

By  at February 24, 2021  , , ,  No comments
What We Know About Ivan Drago's Return In Creed 2

Although Creed was perfectly enjoyable to watch on its own, ultimately it served as another piece of the wider Rocky mythology. After all, Michael B. Jordan's Adonis Creed is the son of the late Apollo Creed, who died in the ring boxing Russian powerhouse Ivan Drago in Rocky IV. Creed spent less time delving into Adonis' family ties and more into him training with Rocky Balboa to get his professional boxing career off the ground. So if Creed echoed the original Rocky, then Creed 2 unquestionably echoes Rocky IV, as the sequel sees Adonis going mano a mano with Viktor Drago, Ivan's son. And just like Adonis has Rocky in his corner for support, Viktor has daddy Drago, being reprised by Dolph Lundgren. The older Ivan was finally shown in the new Creed 2 trailer today, and the preview made it clear that more than 30 years after we last saw him, his intensity hasn't diminished.

Often considered one of the greatest villains in the Rocky franchise, Ivan Drago was introduced in 1985's Rocky IV as the Soviet Union's best boxer, his strength unparalleled thanks to a combination of training and injection of an unnamed substance (assumed to be steroids). Unlike the boastful Clubber Lang from Rocky III, Ivan was a man of few words and only had one goal: to be the best fighter in the world. He proved just how powerful he was when he killed Apollo Creed, who didn't take Ivan seriously enough, with multiple blows to the head. As if killing an opponent in the ring wasn't bad enough, Ivan also didn't express any remorse for Apollo's death, having earlier uttered the famous line, "If he dies, he dies." Not taking the death of his friend sitting down, Rocky challenged Ivan to their own fight, and after going through an intense '80s training montage, our esteemed protagonist came out victorious after 15 rounds. The later Rocky movies never addressed what happened to Ivan afterwards, but the damage Rocky sustained during that fight led to brain damage, which played into his struggles during Rocky V.

This brings us to Creed 2, where Ivan Drago is back after more than 30 years and has trained his son Viktor for his own boxing career. Dolph Lundgren has previously said that he was initially hesitant to reprise Ivan after all this time because he didn't want to hurt the "image" of this iconic character, but after reading the Creed 2 script and seeing that this movie was a chance to show Ivan's "damaged, struggling side," he signed on. This suggests that Creed 2 will explore Ivan's vulnerabilities; whether they're physical (maybe injecting that junk took a toll on his body) or psychological.

However, that doesn't mean that Ivan will be any less of an antagonistic figure. As Rocky notes in the new Creed 2 trailer, Viktor Drago was "raised in hate," implying that Ivan did whatever it took to ensure his son would also be a great fighter, no matter what the cost. And clearly Rocky's fight with Ivan still heavily looms in his mind, as he tells Adonis that Ivan broke things in him "that ain't ever been fixed" and he doesn't want Adonis to suffer a similar fate going up against Viktor.

Just like how Rocky didn't step back into the ring for Creed, we shouldn't expect Ivan Drago to either for Creed 2, although that doesn't necessarily preclude him from getting into a tussle with someone outside of a boxing setting. That said, since the news anchor in the Creed 2 trailer says that it's Viktor Drago who challenges Adonis rather than the other way around, I wouldn't be surprised if this was done on Ivan's urging. He can no longer fight professionally, but having seen Adonis rise up in the boxing world, he sees this as an opportunity for his son to knock the main protagonist off his perch and bring some glory back to the Drago name. And just like what happened with Apollo, if Viktor happens to kill Adonis in the ring, so be it.

We'll find out what's in store for Ivan Drago when Creed 2 punches its way into theaters on November 21. If you're interested in learning what else is screening for the rest of the year, look through our 2018 release schedule.
