Why Captain Marvel Will Be The First Theatrical Movie On Disney's Streaming Service

Disney has a lot of bases covered when it comes to its movie offerings, from live action remakes/adaptations of its classic animated movies and Pixar offerings to installments from the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Star Wars franchise. This has cemented Disney as the biggest filmmaking titan in Hollywood, and next year, the company will jump into the streaming game with its own subscription service. We've already learned over the course of this year about some of the original content that will be available exclusively on the Disney streaming service, but it's now been clarified that with next March's Captain Marvel, every Disney movie released in theaters will also flow directly to the service, right as the studio's deal with Netflix expires.

Back in 2012, Disney and Netflix signed an agreement that gave the latter rights to air all of the former's live action and animated movies that were released in 2016 and afterwards. But once Disney announced that it was launching its own streaming service, the countdown began for the Disney/Netflix deal to expire, and when 2019 rolls around, that'll be it for this alliance. Although Netflix exclusive Marvel TV shows like Daredevil and Luke Cage will remain on that service, The New York Times reports that on the movie side of things, Captain Marvel, the MCU's penultimate Phase 3 entry, will kick off the trend of Disney's theatrically released movies heading straight to the streaming service once they've enjoyed their time in theaters. Obviously there will be many (if not all) of Disney movies from decades past that will also be available on the service, but on the streaming side of things, this is the only place you'll be able to find the Mouse House's theatrical offerings.

If you go on Netflix right now, you'll find Disney movies like Cars 3, Thor: Ragnarok and Star Wars: The Last Jedi, but their time there is wrapping up soon. In the Marvel corner, Black Panther and Avengers: Infinity War still haven't premiered on Netflix, but even if they, and Ant-Man and the Wasp when it arrives on home media, do get some Netflix time, it will only be weeks or months at most. Disney is preparing to shake up the streaming world in a major way, and along with original content like a live action Star Wars TV series and the Lady and the Tramp remake, including its latest theatrical movies will be a good way to entice subscribers. That's not to say that there aren't still issues, as Disney is reportedly trying to buy back the TV rights to the Star Wars movies from Turner, but at least where its future releases are concerned, Disney has that covered.

The Disney streaming service is set to launch sometime in fall 2019, so stay tuned to CinemaBlend for more updates on its progress. Disney has had a big year at the box office. Although there have been a few misses, Incredibles 2 and Ant-Man And The Wasp both were wins this summer, and Disney has one more movie coming this August, Christopher Robin. It's a movie that should be cute for kids and have a nostalgia factor for adults, and the new numbers seem to indicate that Christopher Robin could make a tidy amount at the box office this weekend. According to early estimates, Disney's Christopher Robin could make over $30 million dollars at the box office this weekend, and some estimates are tracking even a bit higher.

Per a report at Box Office Pro, Christopher Robin should make around $31,500,000 at the box office during opening weekend domestically. That's not even counting worldwide numbers, as Disney's Christopher Robin will likely have a solid run in the U.K. and other places, as well. Although we sometimes go through periods where there are few kids movies at the box office, this weekend isn't one of those times. Disney's Christopher Robin will be competing for attention against Hotel Transylvania 3 and Teen Titans Go! To The Movies at the box office. If it can hold its own against the animated movies, as well as Mission: Impossible -- Fallout -- which should have a different audience but a strong box office this weekend---then Christopher Robin should be sitting pretty.

Absent a few charming trailers, Disney hasn't spent as much time promoting its return to the Hundred Acre Wood as it did on advertising for movies like like Solo: A Star Wars or Ant-Man and the Wasp leading up to release. Still, there's clearly some interest in Disney's Christopher Robin due to the Winnie the Pooh fanbase out there. It also wouldn't be a shock to see families head to the movies in the last few days (or weeks, depending on school system) before school starts up again.

Disney already hit a huge milestone earlier in 2018 when the studio hit the $2 billion mark at the domestic box office, thanks to a stellar performance from Incredibles 2. Anything else from here on out should just be the icing on the cake. The studio does still have a few more movies coming this year. Disney's Christopher Robin hits on August 3, Ralph Breaks The Internet: Wreck-It Ralph 2 hits over the Thanksgiving holiday, and then Disney has The Nutcracker and the Four Realms and Mary Poppins Returns in theaters before the end of the year. We'll have to wait and see if all of these end up being winners for the studio. Regardless, fans won't be able to say that Disney hasn't given us a variety of projects to watch this year.

The Crazy Reason Why Ben Affleck May Lose His Batman Role In The DCEU

There has been a lot of talk about whether or not Ben Affleck will actually return to the role of Batman in the DC film universe. While the initial expectation was that Affleck would be playing Batman for some time to come, in recent days, it's become far less clear and rumors of recasting or future movies being prequels with a younger actor have been running rampant. However, now another factor has popped up that might keep Ben Affleck from playing Batman again whether he wants to or not. Affleck may be too expensive to insure now that he has entered rehab.

Last week Ben Affleck checked himself into rehab for the second time in barely over a year. While this could certainly impact several of his upcoming film projects due to delays if he's not ready to go back to work, it could have the biggest potential impact on his role as Batman. Insurance industry insiders are telling The Wrap that due to Affleck's situation, while a studio would be able to get insurance on the actor, the deductible would likely be exceptionally high as the insurance company would see Affleck as a high risk for the film. The cost of insurance could be so high that the studio might very well decide to recast Affleck simply because it doesn't want to pay the bond.

Up until now, it's been far from clear whether or not Ben Affleck would ever return to play Batman so all this could actually be a moot point if the actor never had any intention of donning the cowl again. Several reports have indicated that was the case, but so much has stayed in the shadows regarding the future of DC's film universe that we just don't know most of what is happening and what isn't and what is currently planned for the future. While Affleck has officially stepped down from directing the Batman movie which he had been attached to do, he is still, officially, attached to star in it. If Affleck is planning on playing Batman again, it would be unfortunate if the reason he ended up not doing so was because of the insurance company.

Insurance is no joke when it comes to film production. Tens or hundreds of millions of dollars are being put out on any given production and if an actor is unable to perform for even a short period of time it can cost a lot of money. The studio gets insurance to make sure they won't be out the cost if something goes wrong, but, of course, the insurance company doesn't want to pay the cost either, so it all comes down to a question of whether the film, and the people that are part of it, are a good bet or not.

Most of the DC universe is clouded in mystery, so just add this to the list of reasons we just don't know what they're planning to do next.
