New Deadpool 2 Concept Art Shows How Cable's Arm Could Have Looked

Josh Brolin brought Marvel's Cable to life in Deadpool 2 and while he looked amazing, some brand new concept art reveals how the character could have looked. Jerad S.Marantz was a concept artist on Deadpool 2 and he's recently been filing Instagram with some of the pre-production work that he did, including a different design for Cable's iconic metal arm. Check it out.

Jarad Marantz talks about how this arm was originally designed, based on the idea that Cable had embedded this prosthetic underneath the tech from the techno-organic virus that the character suffers from. The fact that Cable is part machine and part man is due to this virus, and it would have cost him the use of his arm without the use of this prosthetic. Whether or not that's technically what's happening with Cable's arm in Deadpool 2 is never specifically stated, but it's a pretty cool idea that we can assume is the case unless we hear otherwise in the future.

We get multiple angles of the metal arm here, and it looks pretty cool. A lot of fine detail that makes him look like he's part Terminator, which, he sort of is. The final design that we got in Deadpool 2 isn't all that different, with what at least appear to be a few cosmetic differences. Since Jarad Marantz says that these ideas were worked on with the costume designer, and one assumes the folks in charge of the film's digital effects, the changes were likely due to finding something that was easy to create that worked for everybody involved. Here's a partial shot of the final version.

It's always interesting to see the evolution of different ideas as they eventually culminate in what ends up on screen. Things like costume design, or in this case, arm design, are meant to tell you a lot about a character without having to spend screen time explaining things. In this case, there might be details about a character in this design that aren't ever important, but in the era of massive franchise filmmaking, these sorts of things need to be dealt with at the beginning so that, if and when, issues like the techno-organic virus become important later on, the work was done at the beginning and nobody needs to retcon anything.

We know we will be seeing Cable again, as there is an X-Force movie planned for sometime in the not too distant future. Perhaps we'll learn more about the ways Cable has modified himself to deal with his affliction at that time.

Early #conceptart for #cable arm. This was a pretty cool idea. In order to control the #technoorganicvirus Cable embeds this prosthetic under the virus tech in order to still use it as a functioning arm. It was a great change of pace to do some hard surface work in #zbrush. I really enjoyed bouncing ideas back-and-forth with the costume designers @kurtandbart and director @davidmleitch #marvel #marvelmovies #fox #deadpool2 #deadpool

The Pitch For A Quiet Place Did Not Go Over Well With Almost Everyone Who Heard It

The Pitch For A Quiet Place Did Not Go Over Well With Almost Everyone Who Heard It

A Quiet Place has become one of the biggest movies of the year thanks to a completely original concept that is executed near perfectly. However, not everybody saw the film's potential originally. It turns out the premise was so unique that pretty much nobody really got the movie when it was presented to them. The producers behind the movie have recently spoken about the difficulties that came with pitching the idea to studios. As producer and co-writer Bryan Woods says, even those they expected would cut them a break just didn't seem to get it. According to Woods...

We would pitch it to studio executives that were fans of ours, producers that we had worked with, even close friends, and people would just look at us and their eyes would glaze over. They'd just be like, 'What are you guys talking about? A movie with no dialogue? I don't see how that's a movie. That doesn't sound very commercial. You should just move past it.

On paper, as the movie literally was at that point, it's understandable how a studio executive might not understand a movie like A Quiet Place. Even if your goal is to make "good movies" rather than simply make money, those good movies still have to make money, or eventually, you can't make good movies anymore. A movie with little or no dialogue sounds like something that wouldn't appeal to the mass market and thus would have trouble being financially successful.

Even the studio that eventually did produce A Quiet Place, Platinum Dunes, knew they were taking a risk with the movie. Co-founder of the studio Andrew Form told Slate that it wasn't simply the premise that the studio was taking a risk on. They were also putting a great deal of faith in John Krasinski. As writer, director, and star of the movie, everything was riding on him.

The movie was risky on every level; You start reading [the script] and go, 'Oh, there's no dialogue.' The idea was so original. And here we are coming to the studio with John: 'This is the guy we're betting on to star, write and direct this movie for us. And we're all in on him! You have to trust us. We're not going to let you down.'

Luckily, the faith was not misplaced. A Quiet Place has grossed over $300 million around the world on a reported budget of less than $20 million, making it not only one of the highest grossing films of the year, but also one of the most profitable. It's minimal use of dialogue, rather than pushing audiences away, has engaged them even more, and made many much more conscious of their movie theater behavior, which isn't a bad thing either. With a sequel reportedly in the early stages, A Quiet Place has transformed from risky venture to full-on franchise.

Something that is not in its correct historical time; a mistake in chronology, such as by assigning a person or event to the wrong time period The Queen of England is a bit of an anachronism, with her old-fashioned pillbox hats. Did you catch the anachronisms in the latest action blockbuster set in ancient Rome?

To me, A Quiet Place feels more "A" than "B." Sure, it's definitely trying to make money, but its creators are not going the obvious route and are taking risks. I have a ton of respect

A Quiet Place deserves the critical acclaim, though it's not perfect it is however an absolute triumph and a real spectacle. Certainly one of those "Movies to see before you die" types. If you haven't seen it yet, do something about that.
Official Discussion: A Quiet Place [SPOILERS] : movies

A Quiet Place did not have the usual asinine Hollywood contrivances or spoon-fed plot thrusts, but it did invoke visceral fear by mere competent storytelling. Every single moment of this film vise-gripped the audience, as danger lurked around every corner, with an infinite number of shoes to be dropped.

Yes, Sam Elliott's Oscar Nomination Response Involved An F-Bomb

Yes, Sam Elliott's Oscar Nomination Response Involved An F-Bomb

As of this morning, this year's Oscar nominations have been announced, and while there were a few snubs and surprises, Sam Elliott's recognition for A Star is Born wasn't one of them. Check out Elliott's funny and humble reaction to the exciting news:

I think the thing off the top of my head might be, 'It's about fucking time.' Beyond that, it's really about the work; it's just about the creative process. It's great to be recognized for that, that's really all it's about.

Sam Elliott has been delivering memorable performance for over 50 years, so what's more shocking is that 2019 marks the first time the 74-year-old actor has been nominated for an Oscar. Some of the actor's best known movie appearances include in 1969's Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, 1989's Road House and 1993's Tombstone.

Sam Elliott is in Oscar contention for Supporting Actor in Bradley Cooper's remake of A Star Is Born, which received a total of eight nominations this morning, including for Best Picture, Best Actor for Cooper, Best Actress for Lady Gaga, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Cinematography, Best Sound Mixing and Best Original Song for "Shallow."

He gave an emotional performance as the brother and manager to Cooper's character Jackson Maine, Bobby, especially toward the end of the film when heavier themes of addiction and loss are played out on screen.

Along with his initial reaction to his Oscar nomination, Sam Elliott described to Deadline the number of elements in A Star is Born that he believes has contributed to the film's success among critics and audiences alike.

Although last year's movie is the fourth version of the Star is Born story, Elliott said the combination of the music, the story of love and loss and theme of addiction throughout make it universally relatable to people. He continued with these words:

I think my biggest takeaway is just how fortunate I am. Number one, to still be in the game, but to have an opportunity to work with two people like Bradley and Stefani (Lady Gaga), it's just extraordinary. 50 years into the game and all of a sudden to have anything to do with this, to be connected with a film like this, it's just a wonderful gift.

Sam Elliott shares his Supporting Actor nomination with two other first time nominees: Adam Driver for BlackKklansman and Richard E. Grant for Can You Ever Forgive Me? Oscar winners in the Supporting Actor category from the last two years were also given a nod this morning: Sam Rockwell for his role of former U.S. President George W. Bush in Vice and Mahershala Ali for Green Book.

Sam Rockwell took home the Supporting Actor prize last year for Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri and Mahershala Ali the year prior for Moonlight. Judging by the award season thus far, Ali is the frontrunner is this category, but we'll have to see on Oscar night, which unfolds February 24 and will be televised by ABC.
