Red Sparrow Rate And Discuss With Spoilers

If you've been waiting for a spy thriller to make big news at the box office again, you're in luck with this weekend's Red Sparrow. The Jennifer Lawrence / Joel Edgerton starring espionage flick is going to try and give Black Panther a run for its money, and audiences might be willing to give it a shot. But of course, when you've got a new movie trying to make headlines, there's going to be a lot of discussion around it.

Which is totally our cue to welcome you to another weekend's round of Rate and Discuss -- the place where you, the audience, give us your honest feedback on the big ticket contenders of the week. It certainly looks like an interesting road ahead for Red Sparrow, as critical reaction seems to be a slightly mixed bag. Though the consensus seems to follow closely to what our official review had to say about the film, which was the following:

Red Sparrow isn't nearly as smart as it thinks it is, but it's maybe just smart enough to keep an audience entertained.

Of course, you might have some differing thoughts regarding Red Sparrow's quality, and we want to hear from what you thought about the film! With that in mind, we'd like you to consider the following discussion questions as you give us your opinion in the Comments below:

How long did it take you to find out the true identity of MARBLE?If you've read the book, how well do you feel the film adapted Red Sparrow from page to screen?Do you think Red Sparrow ranks among Jennifer Lawrence's greatest performances?Does Red Sparrow have you hoping that the following two books, Palace of Treason and The Kremlin's Candidate, will be adapted into their own films?Would Red Sparrow have worked better as a TV series? Some people are comparing Red Sparrow to the work of Paul Verhoeven. Do you agree / disagree with this assessment, and why?

Questions out of the way, it's time rate Red Sparrow on the traditional scale of 0 to 5, with 0 being dead in the water and 5 being a triumph of cinema. Log your rating in the poll below, and don't forget to share your comments on why you feel the film should be rated accordingly!

Before we leave, we'd like to suggest some further reading for you to consider before completing your evaluation of Red Sparrow. In particular, there's some interesting tidbits about how Jennifer Lawrence decided to do her first nude scene for the film, as well as her particular fast food cravings during the film's production. Though if you're one of those people who's kind of over the phenomenon known as J. Law, she has a special message for you as well. Last, but not least, what discussion about Red Sparrow would be complete without addressing the Black Widow in the room, as director Francis Lawrence (no relation) recently gave his feelings on how he sees the comparison between his film and the Marvel character played by Scarlett Johansson.

That's enough homework for this week. Go out there, see Black Widow... er, Red Sparrow, and come back ready to chat! We'll see you back here at CinemaBlend for another Rate and Discuss next Friday, when we'll be discussing A Wrinkle In Time.

Man Reportedly Beaten Outside Cinema For Shouting Avengers: Endgame Spoilers

Man Reportedly Beaten Outside Cinema For Shouting Avengers: Endgame Spoilers

It's been a long wait and Avengers: Endgame is finally here. Fans are packing theaters to see this movie, but not everyone is going to be able to see the blockbuster opening weekend. As such, fans are taking precautions to avoid spoilers at all costs, and even the filmmakers have taken steps to make sure that the plot is as secretive as possible. However, one man in Hong Kong apparently didn't get the memo and was reportedly beaten up for for shouting Endgame spoilers.

Part of what has made Endgame such a unique film is that Marvel Studios has taken extra precautions to keep the film as secretive as possible. Trailers have revealed little information, and the Russo Bros. made it their mission to make sure that people would have an authentic, surprising experience at the theater.

Sadly, in the age of the internet, that's just not really possible. Endgame leaked online ahead of the premiere and hours later, the Russos released a statement asking people to keep all spoilers to themselves. After all, it's one thing to seek spoilers for yourself, but it's wrong to force them on people who don't.

One man decided to take the direct approach with spoilers. According to Deadline, a man reportedly shouted Endgame spoilers to a crowd waiting in line to see the movie. Taiwanese media did not identify the man, but reported that he was left bloodied after the crowd attacked him for the spoilers.

A photo of the man bleeding out of his head and sitting on the street has been circulating the internet.

It's increasingly difficult to avoid spoilers in the age of the internet. A person could see a spoiler just from browsing YouTube and seeing a revealing thumbnail. However, it seems that there are consequences for those who choose to spoil without the anonymity of the internet.

Sometimes you just can't avoid spoilers. My friend had the ending of Endgame spoiled for him a day before he saw the film. Someone he didn't know sent him a direct message on Reddit telling him how the film ends. We determined that the guy was ultimately lying, but he had turned out to be partly correct by accident.

To say that people are excited to see Endgame is an understatement. In China alone -- where this alleged beating took place -- the film is projected to make close to $330 million by the end of the weekend. It's already grossed almost as much as the entire run of the top three films in China.

You can see Avengers: Endgame in theaters right now. After you've seen the film be sure to check back with CinemaBlend for more Marvel coverage, such as our spoiler-filled questions about Endgame or the latest box office numbers.

Ant-Man And The Wasp May Have Snuck In A Classic Marvel Villain

Ant-Man And The Wasp May Have Snuck In A Classic Marvel Villain

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is a crazy place, and with Avengers: Infinity War still fresh in a lot of people's minds, the events of Ant-Man and the Wasp might seem tame by comparison. Nevertheless, Scott Lang and Hope van Dyne will have a lot on their plate in the upcoming sequel, which will include battling villains like Ghost and Sonny Burch. However, with just two weeks left to go until Ant-Man and the Wasp's release, it's being reported that another villain from the comics has been snuck into the movie: Elihas Starr, better known as Egghead (not to be confused with the same-named villain played by Vincent Price on the Batman TV series).

Take this information with a grain of salt for now, but the folks over at Stitch Kingdom have posted an Ant-Man and the Wasp cast list, and in it, Fringe actor Michael Cerveris is listed as playing Elihas Starr. Introduced in 1962's Tales to Astonish #38 (only three issues after Hank Pym, the original Ant-Man, debuted), Elihas Starr was originally an atomic scientist with a head shaped like, you guessed it, an egg. After being fired for espionage, he turned to a life of crime, only to be defeated time and time again by Ant-Man. He also killed the brother of Clint Barton, a.k.a. Hawkeye, and in the end, the archer was responsible for Egghead's death, albeit by accident. In addition to playing The Observer, a.k.a. September, on Fringe, Cerveris' other notable roles include Marvin Frey on Treme, James Castro on The Good Wife, Ramses IV on The Tick and Professor Pyg on Gotham.

Even though Egghead is one of Ant-Man's oldest opponents, it's possible Ant-Man and the Wasp, if he is indeed appearing, he won't be serving in a villainous capacity. There's a chance he might end up being a minion for either Ghost or Sonny Burch, but I suspect he was thrown in as one of the movie's minor players. Well, that and double as an Easter egg, as you can bet there will be some longtime Marvel Comics fans who will perk up upon hearing the name Elihas Starr. Given his scientific background, I wouldn't be surprised if he's working alongside either Hank Pym or Bill Foster. It's also worth mentioning that NCIS: New Orleans actress Riann Steele is listed as playing Catherine Starr. She's not from the comics, but presumably she's Elihas' wife.

Ant-Man and the Wasp buzzes into theaters on July 6, so stay tuned to CinemaBlend for more updates about the movie. In the meantime, don't forget to look through our Marvel movies guide to learn what else is in development for the MCU, as well as our 2018 release schedule to learn what movies are coming out later this year.

Avengers: Infinity War Could Give Us Thanos' Backstory On Blu-ray

Avengers: Infinity War Could Give Us Thanos' Backstory On Blu-ray

Avengers: Infinity War did an impressive balancing act when it came to giving the massive number of characters enough time on screen. The villain Thanos got more than most, but apparently, there might be even more on the way. Thanos creator Jim Starlin recently appeared at the Amazing Comic-Con in Las Vegas and told the assembled crowd that there was as much as 30 minutes of Thanos backstory that was shot and completed, but cut from the final film in order to keep the runtime down to something vaguely acceptable. According to Starlin, the plan is to include this footage in a future Blu-ray release of Avengers: Infinity War.

Avengers: Infinity War was already over two and a half hours long, so it's not shocking if they decided to cut a lot of backstory for Thanos that wasn't strictly necessary. Thanos explains to Doctor Strange why he decided to begin his quest for the Infinity Stones, and we see how he "adopted" Gamora. Those are really the only really important pieces of Thanos' history that the movie needed to give us.

However, Collider reports that Jim Starlin said that while visiting the set of Avengers: Infinity War the writers and directors spent a lot of time asking him about Thanos and really tried to dig into his history. However, he was informed shortly before the film's release that a large chunk of Thanos' backstory that was filmed was being cut out. Starlin's current understanding is that this material will go on some future Blu-ray. It's not clear if the scenes will be re-edited into the film as an Extended Edition or if they'll simply be included as extras.

The Russo Brothers have already said that the Blu-Ray for Avengers: Infinity War will likely include a lot of deleted scenes, as they encouraged a lot of improvisation on set, and thus have many different takes of the different scenes in the film. However, these scenes would be something else. While one assumes some of these scenes would give Josh Brolin even more time to shine as Thanos, some of the sequences apparently included seeing Thanos as a youth, so we apparently would have seen the character grow up on Titan and learn about all the key moments in his life that led to his decision to find the Infinity Stones by watching him grow up rather than simply watching explain it all to Doctor Strange.

As this is second-hand information, it's possible that the game of telephone has resulted in some of this detail getting confused, but if there is really 30 more minutes of Thanos material from Avengers: Infinity War that's been completed, certainly the fans of the movie are going to want to see it. We'll keep our eyes open for the Extended Edition Blu-ray that we hope is really on the way.

The Blu-Ray and DVD release of Avengers: Infinity War may feature an extended cut of the ensemble superhero movie that could be over three hours in length. If this rumor is true, it would add over
