James Wan Explains That Pitbull Song In Aquaman

Finally out in theaters, Aquaman is getting plenty of praise for being a movie that's main mission is just to have fun. It doesn't care how cheesy or crazy it is. However, even the strongest defenders of Aquaman must still be puzzled by the inclusion of an original song by Pitbull that drops right in the middle of the movie. Director James Wan explained his reasoning for why he wanted to include the song.

Putting the song in the sequence where Aquaman and Mera walk out of the water in slow motion, I felt: For fuck's sake, let's have fun with it! It's something out of Fast and Furious. Pitbull was in there very early on. He was really excited to do something for the film. That sequence is very tongue-in-cheek, and we just wanted to have fun with it. And we wanted a cheeky song at that point of the movie. I just wasn't sure what song it was going to be.

"For fuck's sake, let's have fun with it" is the best summarization of Aquaman that I have yet to hear.

At one point during the film, Aquaman (Jason Momoa) and Mera (Amber Heard) emerge from the ocean in slow motion, and then suddenly and inexplicably, Pitbull's "Ocean to Ocean" begins to play. It features Pitbull rapping about the plot of the movie, but the hook of the song is a cover of Toto's "Africa" featuring Rhea. Then, as quickly as it arrives, it disappears into the night.

It's a real thing that happens in this movie. While all of it feels pretty random (Why Pitbull? Why "Africa?"), the song was actually written for the movie before Pitbull signed on to record it. Director James Wan told Business Insider that he wanted to include a fun, cheeky song in the movie, but didn't immediately know that was going to be an "Africa" cover with Pitbull. If that's not the definition of tongue-in-cheek, then I don't know what is.

If you'd like to hear this song for yourself (and why wouldn't you?!), here is the official song from the film's soundtrack. Feast your ears on this:

"Ocean to Ocean" is certainly in line with the tone of Aquaman. The film is getting a lot of attention for how much fun it is and the crazy visuals on display. Not every movie can have a Pitbull song AND a Kraken voiced by Julie Andrews.

Aquaman is out in theaters right now. For everything DC has got coming down the pipeline, here's out DC movie release guide.

Rotten Tomatoes Has Responded About Gottis High User Ratings Score

Rotten Tomatoes Has Responded About Gottis High User Ratings Score

This past weekend saw the release of John Travolta's new film Gotti, a biopic about the eponymous notorious mob boss. The film debuted to negative reviews from critics and maintains a 0% critical score on review aggregation site Rotten Tomatoes. Yet the audience score on the site tells an entirely different story and currently sits at a favorable 67%. This disparity with the high user score based on thousands of ratings has led to comments that the audience score is being artificially manipulated. That is just a rumor and there is no evidence to prove any conspiratorial behavior or wrongdoing, but when asked if there was any unusual activity for the film, a Rotten Tomatoes spokesperson responded:

We closely monitor our platforms and haven't determined there to be any problems. All of the reviews were left by active accounts.

In the past, Rotten Tomatoes has made it clear that it would take action against any fake reviews, but this statement to Gizmodo shows that, at least from Rotten Tomatoes' perspective, everything is on the up and up, and Gotti's user score is legit. Obviously this is not the first time that Rotten Tomatoes has been the subject of controversy, as the site has had to address fake user reviews and people trying to tank the scores of movies in the past. So you have to hope that Rotten Tomatoes has ways it determines the veracity of reviews and accounts to try to maintain the integrity of the scores on the site.

It is common for audience scores to be higher than critical ones, so this is not necessarily a new phenomenon, but the amount of scores and the huge disparity between the two scores is what had some people online crying foul. They cited the fact that even though Gotti has nearly the same number of user reviews as Incredibles 2(7000+), a film playing on thousands more screens that made millions of dollars more. The marketing team for Gotti has embraced the score disparity, using it as a tool to get people to see the film, saying that audiences loved it and critics are just trolls that put out "a hit" on the film. But these things alone are circumstantial and not evidence of phony reviews or score manipulation. Based on Rotten Tomatoes' own monitoring, everything appears to be above board.

There is often a great deal of importance placed on a movie's critical and audience scores on Rotten Tomatoes. And although people often misunderstand how the score is calculated and what it represents, it still guides the moviegoing choices of many consumers and makes it incredibly valuable, much to the chagrin of many in the industry. Because of the weight people place on Rotten Tomatoes scores, they will continue to be a source of controversy. Nevertheless, reviews, be they from audiences or critics, are merely guideposts, and you should always take in the available information, evaluate it and make an informed decision about what you will and won't go see.

Gotti is in theaters now. For all of the biggest movies heading to theaters this year, check out our release schedule.

Rotten Tomatoes has also responded about Gotti's high audience score, saying that all the reviews were left by active accounts and nothing in the company's monitoring indicated any problems. So

The 'What Are Those' Meme Creator Really Hates His Black Panther Shoutout

While it is an unprecedented success and a game changer for Marvel, Ryan Coogler's Black Panther maintained the studio's tried and true formula of incorporating plenty of comedy in with the action. Black Panther has many laugh out loud moments, and most of them come from Letitia Wright's Shuri. One of Shuri's standout moments was when T'Challa came to her lab rocking some royal flip flops, and upon seeing them, she exclaimed "What are those?!" Well, apparently this is a reference to a meme, and the meme's creator is none too happy about its inclusion in the film. Busco, aka Brandon Moore, spoke about his reaction to the scene, saying:

When I saw [the scene], my girl was trying to record it. I slapped the phone out of her hand, because I was like, 'I don't want to fucking be a part of this.' For real. Every time I see that shit, I get depressed.

Well, that's a bit extreme. Busco is upset that the meme gained such popularity, and because his name and face weren't attached to it, he wasn't able to monetize it. The origin of the meme came in 2015 when he was recording a friend being arrested and he approached a police officer and remarked on the officer's choice in footwear by uttering the now famous phrase. The phrase quickly went viral on Instagram and Vine. At the time, Busco wasn't concerned about gaining fame from the meme, but his opinion has changed. He now regrets that he didn't pursue a copyright in order to better monetize his creation. So it sounds like whenever he sees it now, including in Black Panther, it feels like a missed opportunity and money lost.

While Busco is sick at the inclusion of his meme in Black Panther, the police officer, Sergeant. Sean Fenner, who was the subject of such shoe game ridicule, is actually proud of the memory and its inclusion in the film. The moment wasn't just for laughs, though. Director Ryan Coogler told The Huffington Post that the moment was also meant to tell the audience something about Shuri. She rarely leaves Wakanda and her connection to the outside world is through the digital realm, thus referencing a three-year-old meme is the kind of thing she would do.

I get that Busco is upset because he didn't really benefit from something that he created becoming popular, but I question how much of a difference pursuing copyright protection at the time would have made. If that even is something you can copyright, the internet has a short memory, and that meme was eventually usurped by "Damn Daniel" and any number of other things. Maybe those internet dollars are enough to retire off one popular meme, but maybe not. I doubt that it would still be super relevant in 2018 if it wasn't included in Black Panther. And if Disney would have had to pony up money to him to use it, it probably wouldn't have been included at all. Now at least his creation is immortalized in a beloved film, even if his name isn't attached to it.

You can see Shuri owning that line in Black Panther in theaters now, and she'll deliver some more humor when Avengers: Infinity War hits theaters on April 27. For all the latest on whether memes are art, stay tuned to CinemaBlend.

When Black Panther Will Finally Be Available Streaming

Black Panther is the biggest movie of the year at the box office, but if somehow you haven't seen it, or you just really want to see it again, you'll have that chance very soon. Netflix has revealed the new movies and series coming to the streaming platform next month, and among the new batch of binge-able goodies is Black Panther which will bow in just a couple of weeks on September 4.

This is likely exciting news for fans, and based on the box office there are a lot of those. While those who needed to see Black Panther again may have picked up the Blu-ray or purchased a Digital version, those that did not will be able to watch the massive Marvel hit as many times as they want in just a few days. Another of Disney's releases from earlier this year, A Wrinkle in Time will hit at the end of the month, on September 25.

Of course, as some of the biggest new releases on Netflix next month are Disney titles, one has to wonder what's going to happen as these titles go away for good. Disney is set to launch its own streaming service next year and we know that the current deal with Disney is set to run out with none of Disney's movies releasing theatrically in 2019 or beyond set to go to Netflix. Avengers: Infinity War and Ant-Man and the Wasp are both expected to show up on Netflix down the line, but they'll be the last Marvel films to do so.

Netflix has said that it's not worried about the deal with Disney ending, mostly because the majority of Netflix growth in recent months has been internationally, and the Netflix deal with Disney only exists in a few countries. Still, Netflix subscribers in the U.S. and Canda are a big part of the total subscriber base and it will be interesting to see how many jump ship from Netflix to the Disney service once it's available.

Of course, the reverse is also true and because Disney has existing deals with services like Netflix, the studio won't be able to just dump the entire MCU or Star Wars franchise on its service at launch, potentially making it less attractive, at least at first. Disney CEO Bob Iger has said that's part of the reason the service is investing in original content, like a new Star Wars series and original films like live-action versions of Lady and the Tramp and The Sword in the Stone.

Still, the fact that Black Panther is coming to Netflix is awesome, as it's absolutely the sort of film that deserves a rewatch, perhaps several. Just don't stop to think about what happens next in Avengers: Infinity War. It may make things a bit too depressing.

Black Panther will hit Netflix on September 4th, making it the last piece of the Marvel Cinematic Universe that will make it to the streaming platform before Disney moves forward with the rollout of its own streaming service in 2019. Once Disney gets their own platform up and running, most of their properties, both in television and film, will
