Melissa McCarthy Doesnt Plan On Letting Her Kids Watch The Happytime Murders

Melissa McCarthy Doesnt Plan On Letting Her Kids Watch The Happytime Murders

We have seen a fair number of comedies debut so far in 2018, with R-rated romps like Blockers, Deadpool 2, and Game Night standing out as some stellar examples. However, the genre is about to get odder later this summer with the release of The Happytime Murders, which will take seemingly family-friendly puppets and inject them into the hard-R world of a Los Angeles detective story. Melissa McCarthy is headlining the affair, and as the actress explained to CinemaBlend and other outlets during a visit to the set last year, she has no intention of letting her kids watch it, even with the puppets. McCarthy explained:

It's definitely a grown-up movie. My kids are like, 'We can't wait to see this!' And I'm like, 'I can't wait to show you, when you're 40! It will be so wonderful, when you're 110 and you can see this!' I think it's part of the fun of it. Somebody was saying that there's always that thing, when you watch something from The Muppets, one of the movies, or Sesame Street, there's always that inkling of, when the lights go off, somebody says cut, and they walk out the back door, do they go into the real world and have a life? This is really seeing behind the curtain. When the lights are off and they're not having to perform for people, you see the real grind of their lives, and there's something really cool about it. There's a weird, edgy coolness, and it's really funny.

So, don't let the puppets fool you; this is not a Sesame Street-esque movie that Melissa McCarthy thinks kids should see. The Happytime Murders may include puppet characters and some colorful personalities, but it's still very much an R-rated movie that pushes the envelope in terms of content. The film will actively acknowledge that these puppets have a collective legacy as children's entertainers, but it will depict the "edgy" nature of their lives when the cameras aren't rolling.

Elsewhere in Melissa McCarthy's remarks about The Happytime Murders, the actress continued and explained how the film is specifically aimed at older audiences, with the puppets merely serving to accent the more mature material. She said:

This is not like a raunchy kid's movie. It's not. It's really just a straight up gritty comedy that happens to have puppets. And I only say it like that because somehow, at least in what we've seen and what we're working on every day, it really does make it what I dreamed that it would be, in that it's just a good, gritty crime movie that happens to be really funny. And there's this side note that there's puppets in it.

The Happytime Murders centers its story on veteran detectives Edwards (Melissa McCarthy) and Philips (Bill Barretta), who are forced to team up when a series of murders start taking place in the puppet underworld. Along the way, they find themselves embroiled in a massive conspiracy full of drugs, sex, and gratuitous violence. Based on that description alone, it makes perfect sense to know that Melissa McCarthy thinks the kids should wait to see this one.

The Happytime Murders will premiere in theaters later this summer on August 24. Make sure to keep it here for more updates related to the bizarre buddy cop comedy, and head over to our movie premiere guide to get more information on all of the other films that are set to premiere this year!

Dog Days Actually Cast All Of Its Canine Characters Before Any Of The Humans

Dog Days Actually Cast All Of Its Canine Characters Before Any Of The Humans

In case you couldn't tell by the title, dogs are a pretty crucial part of the new movie Dog Days. The movie weaves together five different stories set in Los Angeles, and one key thing all of them have in common is a special four-legged friend. This obviously made it very important for the production to find the best of the best when it came to animal talent -- and director Ken Marino recently told me that they were so key that they came on-board before any of the human stars:

I met some animal trainers, dog trainers, and we hired this guy, Mark Gordon, and he was great! And I said, 'Who you are your rock stars? Who are the dogs you're like, 'There's something special about this dog.' And so he immediately showed me a picture of the dog that plays Charlie, whose name I'm forgetting right now, but a great dog - the Goldendoodle. He was just quirky and weird and funny and awkward, and perfect. So I was like, 'Well, tell me the things that he does, and we'll write towards that.' And then we sort of started casting around that dog. The dogs were actually cast before the human actors were cast.

Dog Days held its domestic press junket this past week in Los Angeles, and it was during my sit down with Ken Marino that I learned about the unique casting strategy that the romantic comedy took collecting its ensemble. Evidently the film found it necessary to not only prioritize getting the dogs before bringing in the humans, but they even had an important impact on the script -- as their special abilities wound up dictating what they would ultimately be doing in the story.

The dog Ken Marino singles out, Charlie, is the one that is paired with Adam Pally's character, Dax, in the film. Dax is a lazy, irresponsible layabout, and he finds his lifestyle upended when his sister (Jessica St. Clair) and her husband (Thomas Lennon) have twins and need him to take care of their pet. It's a problematic situation because Dax lives in a building with a "no animals" policy, but also because Charlie is the kind of dog who does what he wants when he wants to: he'll flop right on top of Dax at a random moment, take forever on walks sniffing things, and wake him up early in the morning. It's definitely a part that requires a trained animal, and the dog that plays Charlie does a wonderful job.

You can watch Ken Marino talk about the process of casting the dogs of Dog Days by clicking play on the video below:

In addition to its collection of canine actors, Dog Days stars Nina Dobrev, Tone Bell, Adam Pally, Vanessa Hudgens, Jon Bass, Ron Cephas Jones, Finn Wolfhard, Eva Longoria, Rob Corddry, Tig Notaro, and more, and arrives in theaters this weekend.

While season 2 isn't as good as the first season (they try to juggle to many 'main characters') I would recommend Dog Days to anyone looking for a cute entertaining anime.

In summary, Dog Days feels like a missed opportunity. It deserves credit for avoiding the kinds of gratuitous gross-out gags that fill so many PG-13 and R-rated comedies these days. But in the areas where Dog Days goes astray, its content issues, ahem, dog it just enough to keep it from being a solid family movie-night choice.

The Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween Trailer Brings Gummy Bears To Life

The Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween Trailer Brings Gummy Bears To Life

It's been nice to see live action kids movies coming out more regularly in recent years. One of those that did better than expected was 2015's Goosebumps, a film based on R.L. Stine's works that went on to make $150 million at the box office. We've been hearing about the sequel a lot lately; however, what we haven't seen was any footage from Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween. That is, until now. You can take a look at the first official trailer for the movie, below.

The first look at Goosebumps 2 reminds us of the premise of the first movie, which featured R.L. Stine's numerous books coming to life. Then we get plenty of shots of these stories coming to life. Living garden gnomes and gigantic insects wreak havoc, and at one point some of the characters in the movie encounter adorable gummy bears that came to life. Soon, however, they realize the gummy bears are actually vicious little creatures out to get them. Just look at those amazing little creatures.

One of the big news stories related to Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween had to do with whether or not Jack Black would be back for the sequel. R.L. Stine is nowhere to be found in the first look at the movie (although there are shots of the ventriloquist dummy asking whether he had been missed), and his IMDB page makes no mention of the sequel. However, he hasn't fully bowed out of live action kids projects or anything, as he does have another kids horror movie coming out later this year called The House with a Clock in its Walls. Yeah, it's a mouthful of a title, but it actually looks like a lot of fun, and will feature tie-ins for Supernatural fans.

Back to Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween, however. Originally this flick was tentatively titled Slappy's Revenge, which meant there was a focus on the ventriloquist dummy in the sequel, and this first look does seem to indicate Slappy will be a big part of the story in Goosebumps 2. The ventriloquist dummy, Slappy is first seen in a mirror reflection, but later seems to be the cause of the havoc that is being wreaked. There's also the aforementioned Slappy moment, as well as some more shots seemingly indicating that Slappy will be responsible for unleashing some of R.L. Stine's other creations into the world.

Sony's new movie is expected to hit theaters on October 12, 2018. It'll be just in time for the Halloween season, and considering the flick's Halloween theme, that release date should be pretty apt. To find out what else is heading to theaters around the costume-oriented holiday, take a look at our full movie schedule.
