Ryan Reynolds Is Teaming Up With Stranger Things Producer For A Video Game Comedy

Now a veteran of the comic book movie genre, having enjoyed plenty of success in the Deadpool movies, Ryan Reynolds is next looking to make his mark on the video game genre. Next year, Ryan Reynolds provides the voice for the titular character in Detective Pikachu, and now he is joining another video game movie, only this one is an original idea and not based on an existing property. The actor will join Stranger Things producer Shawn Levy for the video game action comedy Free Guy.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the sci-fi action comedy from 20th Century Fox will see Ryan Reynolds in the starring role as a background character in a video game who doesn't know that he's in a video game. He has an awakening and discovers the nature of his reality. Then he must join forces with an avatar to prevent his world from being shut down by the makers of the game. The script for Free Guy is written by Matt Lieberman, who also wrote next year's animated reboot of The Addams Family. Shawn Levy will direct Free Guy and also produce alongside Ryan Reynolds. In addition to his producing and directing work on Stranger Things, Shawn Levy has also helmed the Night at the Museum films, Real Steel and This is Where I Leave You. A release date for Free Guy has not yet been set.

The story here sounds familiar, as we have seen lots of stories from The Matrix to The Truman Show that have looked at characters having their eyes opened to the artificiality of their world and their true purpose. The difference here is this will be taking what sounds like a more comedic approach and see the character not trying to escape his world, but save it. Shawn Levy has plenty of comedic experience having directed Date Night and The Internship, and we know Ryan Reynolds can bring the funny, so hopefully that recipe can deliver a hilarious take the world of video games from a somewhat new perspective.

Based on the fact that the world is in danger of being shut down, it sounds like Ryan Reynolds' character will be a resident of some sort of online game that is full of non-playable characters and avatars for real world users alike, with neither knowing the truth about the other at first. There's a lot of great stuff to make fun of in the online gaming world, and you have to think that Free Guy will tap in to some of that. I imagine that there will also be plenty of references and jokes directed specifically at the avid gamers in the audience.

When we talk about video game movies, we are usually mean adaptations, and in that regard Hollywood has failed magnificently. We don't see as many attempts like this to tell a video game story that isn't tied to any specific property, story or fan expectation. The video game movies that aren't adaptations range in quality, from Pixels to Wreck-It Ralph. Still, this being an original story it should give Free Guy plenty of freedom to have a lot of fun and tell its own comedic story.

Head on over to our release schedule to see all the biggest movies still heading to theaters this year, and for all the latest movie news, keep it locked to CinemaBlend.

New Look At Hellboy Sees David Harbour In Action

New Look At Hellboy Sees David Harbour In Action

The Hellboy reboot starring Stranger Things' David Harbour and from director Neil Marshall is arriving in April of next year, and thus far we haven't seen too much from the movie other than some promotional images. Hopefully that is about to change though. We now have a new look from the film itself that shows David Harbour's half-demon in action. Check it out:

He may not be in Hawkins, Indiana anymore, but David Harbour is still running towards danger and otherworldly forces as Hellboy. We've already seen the actor's new Hellboy posing in promotional images, so it's nice to actually get to see David Harbour in action as Big Red. He looks positively humungous here, like his comic book counterpart and cinematic forerunner.

One thing about this look at the film from Empire Magazine is how it distinguishes itself from Guilermo del Toro's two films. The whole image has a gritty texture to it, a visual representation of the darker, R-rated take on the character that we will be getting with this reboot.

And while it could just be the lighting in this still, the Hellboy we see here running through what looks like some sort of dank underground structure is a less saturated red than what we have seen before. Again, it visually distinguishes the character from his previous incarnation.

Speaking to Empire Magazine, director Neil Marshall indicated that this reboot is going to be bloodier and more violent, and while we don't see that yet in this image, you can already begin to get a sense of what the director of The Descent and the Game of Thrones episode "Blackwater" episode is going for. This film is supposed to venture more into horror territory, which makes sense given the subject matter, and should also help Hellboy stand out from the other superhero movies out there.

Next year's Hellboy will be more faithful to the comics and draw inspiration from storylines in the source material, following the eponymous protagonist as he tries to prevent an evil sorceress from destroying humanity. The reboot will have the B.P.R.D., but it is primarily a Hellboy movie and will focus on his personal struggles like his relationship with his adoptive father. Plot details beyond that are mostly being kept under wraps for the moment.

Hopefully this new look at Hellboy is a trickle that teases the flood to come. The film doesn't come out until April, but a teaser trailer before the end of the year doesn't seem outside the realm of possibility.

Hellboy opens in theaters on April 12, 2019. That's just one of a whole host of comic book movies and blockbusters heading to the big screen next year. Check them all out in our 2019 Release Schedule.

Hellboy (released as Hellboy: Call of Darkness in some markets) is a 2019 American superhero film based on the Dark Horse Comics character of the same name.Directed by Neil Marshall, the film stars David Harbour in the title role, alongside Milla Jovovich, Ian McShane, Sasha Lane, Daniel Dae Kim, and Thomas Haden Church.

Much like books, we shouldn't judge movies by their trailers, but I have to say the new Hellboy trailer leaves me cold and wanting. Contrary to what you might think, it's not because of David Harbour replacing Ron Perlman as Anung Un Rama.

Zack Snyder Has Clarified What His Robin Plans Were For Batman V Superman

Zack Snyder Has Clarified What His Robin Plans Were For Batman V Superman

In the two years since its release, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is still generating a lot of conversation among fans, and Zack Snyder has helped with that in recent months. The director has been taking to his Vero account to talk with fans about his time in the DC Extended Universe, including calling into question the identity of the dead Robin. Jason Todd is the one who is killed by The Joker in the comics, but recently Snyder revealed that as he saw it, Dick Grayson was the one who died. Snyder let his followers know about this by simply writing:

Richard

This revelation came after a fan posted about a Suicide Squad deleted scene where Batman, having just captured Harley Quinn, says, "Joker took something important from me, now I'm gonna take something from him." The fan wondered if Batman was referring to Jason Todd, but Zack Snyder later responded that (at least in his mind), it's Richard Grayson, a.k.a. the first Robin, who was taken away from Bruce Wayne, not Jason Todd, the second Robin. It's worth noting this isn't the first time this twist has been brought up, as during Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice's shoot, a gravestone was spotted that read 'Richard John Grayson." However, it remained uncertain whether this was a legit story element or was just a prop thrown onto the set as a joke. Of course, given that a Nightwing movie is in development, that means that if that project goes forward, Dick needs to stay alive. So I suspect that as far as the Warner Bros and DC brass are concerned, Dick is still out fighting crime and Jason is the one buried six feet under.

But Zack Snyder wasn't done with the Robin talk on Vero. Later on, when another fan asked if there was a plan to bring Dick back to life or would he just have stayed dead, the director responded:

stay dead...till Carrie

Longtime DC Comics fans know that Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice was heavily influenced by The Dark Knight Returns, particularly by showing the eponymous heroes coming to blows. While the rumors claiming that Jena Malone was playing Carrie Kelley, the new Robin introduced in The Dark Knight Returns, proved to be false (Malone actually played Jenet Klyburn in the Ultimate Edition), now we know that Zack Snyder did plan on pairing Ben Affleck's Bruce Wayne at some point in the future. No doubt this was part of Snyder's original five movie plan, but given the new direction the DCEU is now going in, as well as Snyder not expected to helm another DC film, who knows if we'll ever see Carrie in a live action theatrical setting.

The DCEU continues with the release of Aquaman on December 21, and don't forget to check out our DC movies guide to find out what else is in development for the franchise.
