How Steven Spielberg Helped Save The Child's Play Franchise

How Steven Spielberg Helped Save The Child's Play Franchise

There are a few names that must be included in any discussion of horror icons: Leatherface, Jason Voorhees, Freddy Krueger, Michael Myers, and with the most terror per pound, Chucky. The killer doll has spawned seven movies in the Child's Play franchise and will soon be returning to prominence in a major way. Not only are creators Don Mancini and David Kirschner are developing a TV series, but a separate feature film reboot is also in the works. However the Child's Play franchise almost didn't make it past MGM and United Artists' successful first film, though ultimately director Steven Spielberg had a hand in helping the sequel see the light of day. As David Kirschner recalled:

They immediately ordered a second film because it had done so well and was received so well. We were in pre-production and getting everything ready, and I'm on a plane to Cincinnati when Richard Burger (head of production for MGM and United Artists) called. 'There's a guy by the name of Christopher Skase at Quintex, they're buying the company and don't want to make horror movies,' he said. I was enraged.

You can certainly see why David Kirschner would be enraged at this, like he told Bloody Disgusting. In the middle of gearing up for a sequel, he had to hear that a corporate change and someone's antipathy toward horror movies was going to stick a knife in the heart of the franchise. This must have been especially frustrating given the performance of the first film. The first Child's Play in 1988 made $33 million domestically, which would be $74 million in today's dollars, which is pretty good for an R-rated horror movie. They had to feel like the rug was pulled out from under them by this decision.

Despite that, even though the money wasn't speaking loud enough to get the sequel done at the previous studio, other studios were interested in those Chucky bucks. David Kirschner's legal team reassured him that everyone was bidding on the sequel, so Child's Play was far from done. He received many phone calls, and one was none other than the man himself, Steven Spielberg who offered some advice. David Kirschner recalled the conversation:

Steven said, 'Look, you made your first film with Universal, just give them your wish list of what you want and I would have done my job in giving them the first crack at it. I owe my career to him and that's still the case today -- I went back to them and said, 'Because of Steven, we're bringing it to you first,' and they met almost all of the demands. That's how we got into the relationship with Universal when five other studios were bidding on it.

Steven Spielberg and David Kirschner had executive produced An American Tail together at Universal, which was a success for the studio. So Steven Spielberg helped guide David Kirschner in the right direction to put Child's Play in the best position to be a success going forward. Probably in part because of the existing relationship and Steven Spielberg's influence, Kirschner was able to get most of what he and Don Mancini wanted for the sequel from Universal. You can tell how grateful he is too, saying that he owes his career to the esteemed director.

Chucky has gone on to become a horror icon in the years since and poetically, this year, Steven Spielberg actually used the character himself for the edgiest joke in his Ready Player One. This isn't the first time Steven Spielberg's influence has justifiably carried a lot of weight. For Ant-Man and the Wasp, he actually wrote to director Peyton Reed to recommend Hannah John-Kamen for the role of Ghost in the film. So Steven Spielberg is clearly a very good friend to have.

In our current horror renaissance with legacy properties like Halloween coming back in a big way, there has never been a better time for Chucky to make a bloody splash. We'll keep you updated on all the upcoming Child's Play projects, and for all the latest in movie news, stay tuned to CinemaBlend.

Why Jim Carrey Cut Way Back On Acting In Hollywood

By  at February 12, 2021  , , ,  No comments
Why Jim Carrey Cut Way Back On Acting In Hollywood

There was a time when Jim Carrey was one of the biggest movie stars in the entire world. A comedian who has carved out a legacy for himself as one of the most unique voices in entertainment, the Ace Ventura actor took a notable step back from the Hollywood spotlight years ago and became far more selective about the roles he chose to take. So why did he do it? Well, in a recent interview, Carrey addressed his step back from Hollywood and explained that he didn't like the increasingly corporate and by-committee direction of Hollywood. The actor revealed:

I just didn't want to be in the business anymore. I didn't like what was happening, the corporations taking over and all that. And maybe it's because I felt pulled toward a different type of creative outlet and I really liked the control of painting --- of not having a committee in the way telling me what the idea must be to appeal to a four-quadrant whatever.

It's a simple enough explanation, isn't it? Hollywood has changed quite a bit since Jim Carrey's broke into the mainstream in films like Dumb & Dumber and The Mask back in the early 1990s, and as he laid out in his recent profile in THR, he didn't like the increasingly corporate approach to filmmaking that felt tailored for mass appeal to wide demographics. As a result, he has shifted his focus away from acting and has branched out into the world of painting as a form of expression, with a particular slant towards political satire in his art.

After all, it's not like Jim Carrey has anything left to prove on the big screen. Between his comedic roles in movies like Bruce Almighty, his (arguably underrated) super villain performance as The Riddler in Batman Forever, and his dramatic turns in films like The Truman Show and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, the guy has virtually done it all.

With all of that said, Jim Carrey did not leave Hollywood entirely. He has remained at least partially active as a performer, with roles in films like Dumb & Dumber To, Kick-Ass 2, and The Bad Batch defining his most recent years on the big screen. Moreover, Carrey was also recently announced as the actor to take on the role of Dr. Ivo Robotnik in the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog adaptation, so he still has some potential blockbuster gas left in the tank as well. That said, the overall arc of his career seems to suggest that he has moved away from the more active tentpole work of his earlier years.

CinemaBlend will bring you more information about all of Jim Carrey's upcoming work as new details are made available to us. On the small screen, you can catch him on Showtime's Kidding when the new series premieres on September 9. Until then, you can head over to our movie premiere guide to read up on all of the films that are still on the docket for 2018!

Sweetman herself later issued a statement: "These documents show that Jim Carrey has lied to the media, the public and the court. Carrey has now been shown for what he is — a dishonest Hollywood celebrity who thinks he can say anything and fool people just because he is famous."

Kristen Stewart Explains How The Charlie's Angels Reboot Will Be Different From Previous Films

Kristen Stewart Explains How The Charlie's Angels Reboot Will Be Different From Previous Films

The first Charlie's Angels reboot came out in 2000, when Kristen Stewart was 10 years old. Back then it was one of the few action-comedies with women starring smack in the center of it. Stewart now excitedly joins Elizabeth Banks' new Charlie's Angels (also starring Noami Scott and Ella Balinska), in a time where female-led stories are hotter than ever. Now 28, the actress has already seen a sustainable career, nabbing film lead after film lead, with the Twilightfranchise setting her into high in the public eye. Stewart will see her return to the mainstream with the upcoming Charlie's Angels, which she explains will be a departure from the usually campy feel the franchise is known for. In her words:

It is true I think, it is not maybe everyone's immediate response that it would be, like, something we would have to see again because the one I grew up with was so much fun, and you know, the re-imagining is so grounded and well intentioned and really shows the way women can work together now. It tries to be warm and funny, but it lacks a kitsch element that we have seen before that works so well.

After the iconic '70s television that came before it, Cameron Diaz, Lucy Liu and Drew Barrymore brought the women detectives into the 21st century in a fun way franchise that didn't take itself too seriously. Since then, the wise-cracking action film has seen some remiss (just look at the James Bond franchise's serious tone), so it makes perfect sense that the Charlie's Angels would find a new tone as well. Kristen Stewart's interview with Entertainment Tonight is a positive indication that director Elizabeth Banks is in tune with how the franchise can be kept alive, and continue to adapt. Ex-angel Lucy Liu even recently commented that she thinks the new franchise would be "a positive result for women", expressing her support.

Kristen Stewart is already hard at work getting in optimal shape for her new role, working on her boxing, with plans to start fighting training soon. She hasn't met the other angels, Naomi Scott and Ella Balinska just yet, but hopefully will soon. Months before she was announced to star, Stewart showed her interest in the reboot, loving the idea of telling a story about strong women working together.

With the #MeToo and equal pay conversations are being regularly expressed and movies such as Wonder Woman, Atomic Blonde and Ocean's 8 have drawn audiences, the film has the ability to be much more memorable this time around. The new Charlie's Angels will be released in theaters on September 27, 2019.
