Why One Shazam! Actor Thinks The DC Movie Works Better Than Some Recent Superhero Films

Since it was announced, Shazam! has always seemed like something of an outlier in the DCEU and among comic book movies in general. The story of a kid who gets magical powers from a wizard that transform him into an adult superhero is unlike anything else out there. And judging by the recent teaser for the film, Shazam! is a fun and truly unique superhero film. Part of that uniqueness is that this movie seems to operate on a smaller scale than we're accustomed to. For Cooper Andrews, who plays Billy Batson's foster father, Victor Vasquez, that scale is what makes the film work better than some recent superhero films, as he explained:

The thing about it is that there's no massive war. There's something very grounded and real about this script, despite the fact that it's about a 15 year-old who says a magic word and turns into a superhero. There's still something very real, something that speaks to everyone, I think, on this one.

It might be strange to think of a movie with magic and superheroes as grounded, but The Walking Dead's Cooper Andrews made a great point here to Comicbook.com. Shazam! isn't some epic contest against alien invaders as we've seen recently in both the MCU and DCEU. Instead, Shazam! is a superhero movie that tells a story that everyone can relate to. Sure, it's about a kid who gets superpowers, but that glee trying out the powers we saw in the trailer is something we would all feel. There will be stakes, but they will be more personal than cosmic. That distinction can set Shazam! apart from its contemporaries and for the better.

What we don't know about Shazam! still far outweighs what we do know, but this more grounded story lines up with what we've heard about the film. Director David F. Sandberg has called it a Christmas movie that is about family and revealed that Billy Batson's mission in the film is to find his mom. While sadly none of us know what its like to shoot lightning out of our hands, the issue of family and belonging are universal and more familiar to people than the pure need to survive that we witness in the grand event films in this genre.

As superhero movies and universes mature and expand, there is a natural tendency, as Jim Gordon suspected in Batman Begins, toward escalation. Every movie has to be bigger, the villain has to be more dangerous and the stakes have to be higher. Not that there is anything wrong with that as long as it is executed properly, but when the world is at stake every time out, the threat is harder to take seriously. What Cooper Andrews said about Shazam! is refreshing because it means that we may be getting something that feels new in this movie. We've already postulated that Shazam! is the DCEU's best hope, and I think that a more grounded story lends credence to that thought.

Shazam! strikes theaters on April 5, 2019. Keep an eye on our guide for all the latest from the DCEU, and to see what movies you can still look forward to in 2019, take a look at our release schedule.

The Disney Fox Deal Will Oust Fox's CEO

The Disney Fox Deal Will Oust Fox's CEO

When companies merge together or get bought out, they have to deal with a lot of redundancy. Each original company had people doing any particular job, and now the new company has two people responsible for the same thing, and probably only needs one. This means that a lot of people usually end up looking for work once a merger is complete, and it appears that one of the people that may be doing just that very soon is the current CEO of 20th Century Fox, Stacey Snider.

While it appears that a number of Fox executives will be hanging around once Disney/Fox deal is done, Alan Horn, the current head of the Walt Disney Company will continue in that role under the newly combined entity, a move that surprises nobody. The heads of the various film divisions, like Marvel Studios, Walt Disney Studios, and Lucasfilm, will report directly to him.

This means there really isn't a place for Stacey Snider. It's not all that surprising. While the people at the bottom of a merger like this are frequently found to be redundant, it happens at the top just as much. We probably shouldn't be too worried for her future, as Deadline says there may already be a couple of major companies with their eye on her once she's available.

20th Century Fox vice chairman Emma Watts will reportedly be the one running that division of the new company, and likely reporting directly to Alan Horn along with the other division heads. While Fox will lose its Marvel properties to Kevin Feige's Marvel Studios, there's still plenty more material under the 20th Century Fox banner, Avatar etc, for Watts to handle. She will likely also be a major player in Disney's dealings with Hulu as streaming becomes a major focus in the new company. The heads of Fox 2000 and Fox Searchlight are also expected to remain in their current positions.

An official announcement on this new structure is expected as early as later this week, though it's unlikely we'll see any major structural changes take place until the merger is completed, which is expected to be sometime early next year. There's a lot of work to do to get the various parts of the massive machine working together smoothly before letting people go.

The Disney/Fox merger is one of the largest of its kind and it will have a fundamental impact on the entertainment industry as a whole. While Fox and its various divisions will continue to exist, the fact that they won't be independent of the rest of Disney means there's basically one fewer major movie studios in the world. This will change the way films are released, as Fox will probably produce fewer major feature films in order to be sure they don't compete directly with all the other properties being produced by Disney.

There's a lot we still don't know about what the new Walt Disney Company will look like when it's all said and done. Stay tuned to CinemaBlend as more information as this major industry shift comes into focus.,

Why The Conjuring Became A Cinematic Universe, According To James Wan

Why The Conjuring Became A Cinematic Universe, According To James Wan

Crossovers are common in Hollywood, but with the creation of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Hollywood has seen even more reason to go all in with interconnected cinematic worlds. This is most common in blockbuster superhero franchises, but in a recent featurette released ahead of the release of The Nun, horror master James Wan opened up and explained how The Conjuring team realized that they had a potential horror cinematic universe on their hands during production on the first film. Wan explained:

One of the things that occurred to all of us early on is, they have a superhero universe, why can't we do that in the horror world? When we were making the first Conjuring, it became very apparent to us that there could be a bigger universe -- so many other great stories that would be awesome to look into.

The Conjuring universe is uniquely-suited for the cinematic universe treatment. After all, with Ed and Lorraine Warren anchoring the entire universe, there are all sorts of different directions and avenues to explore on a horror timeline. James Wan and his team recognized this early on while making the first movie, and as Wan laid out in a recent Nun featurette, the continued success of superhero cinematic universes showed the team that something of this nature would be possible in the long run. Just think about it; if you have seen either of the main Conjuring movies, then you likely know just how deep the Warren family's archive runs.

Check out that featurette for The Nun, below!

A big part of the creation of The Conjuring universe has involved carving out a timeline that makes sense to audiences. The Conjuring and The Conjuring 2 both take place in the 1970s, but Annabelle and Annabelle: Creation take place in the 1960s and the 1950s, respectively. Now, with the release of The Nun on the horizon for next month, The Conjuring franchise is going even further back to the early 1950s to explore how the Valak demon arrived in this universe.

Of course, horror-themed cinematic universes are slowly but surely starting to take shape in Hollywood. The Conjuring is arguably the most well-formed of the bunch, but Universal also recently tried to do something similar with The Dark Universe. That particular world is now on ice following the lackluster performance of The Mummy, but if new leadership is found, if it can take some cues from The Conjuring films, then we could see more horror cinematic universes begin to take shape.

As always, make sure to keep it here for more updates related to The Conjuring universe as new information about the franchise is made available to us. The Nun is set to debut in theaters on September 7, and if you want more details on the rest of this year's major movie releases, then you can head over to our comprehensive movie premiere guide and fill out your moviegoing calendars accordingly!

Black Panther's Chadwick Boseman Fought For The Wakandan Accent

Black Panther's Chadwick Boseman Fought For The Wakandan Accent

It seems impossible to think of now, but the MCU's version of King T'Challa, better known as the superhero Black Panther, almost didn't have that amazing Wakandan accent. But, it sounds like we have star Chadwick Boseman to thank for the filmmakers coming to the right decision. As you might imagine, he had a lot of prep work to do once he decided to take on the role of the first black superhero to lead his own film in the MCU. Boseman has revealed that, along with getting physical training and learning a specific fighting style, he hired a South African dialect coach who helped him come up with the sound we now associate with the Wakandan lilt. But, as Boseman tells it, some of the filmmakers and higher ups in the MCU weren't so sure about his desire to not either use his own American accent or a British accent. Here's what he had to say:

I was very sure... that it was that feeling, that sound. They felt like it was maybe too much for an audience to take. They felt like: Would people be able to understand it through a whole movie? And if we do it now, we're stuck with it. I felt the exact opposite --- like, if I speak with a British accent, what's gonna happen when I go home? Either British or just with my American accent. So [I'd hear], 'Maybe he studied in Europe; maybe he studied in the Americas?' It felt to me like a deal-breaker. Having gone through similar situations before where I was willing to, like, stand up for it I was like, well, here we go again. So, for them I don't think it was that deep, I think it was an opinion.

Chadwick Boseman noted, in his conversation with The Hollywood Reporter's Awards Chatter Podcast, that in researching African nations as he was preparing to take on his role as T'Challa, that he really felt the native language would have clicks in it, mostly because some of the oldest languages on Earth feature that aspect. He also said that having a South African as his dialect coach, helped to give his new accent some familiarity, because it would make people think of Nelson Mandela and that type of esteem, which, obviously, completely fits when you think of all that Wakanda has been able to accomplish behind the scenes in the MCU.

But, a big worry before he stepped onto the screen as T'Challa in 2016's Captain America: Civil War, was that people might not be able to understand him, and, then, if the accent didn't work, they'd be stuck with it in every big screen iteration of the character. So, the powers that be tried to convince Boseman that using his own accent or a British one would work just fine, since it would be completely plausible for the son of a king to be schooled at one of the major universities in American or British lands. Boseman held fast to his idea of what the character of Black Panther needed, though, and ended up winning out.

Chadwick Boseman also revealed that part of the reason he stuck to his guns was the notion that they might end up throwing many other important aspects of the character or the mythology of Wakanda out, and he really didn't want the accent to turn into a slippery slope. He said:

I was like, 'No, this is such an important factor that if we lose this right now, what else are we gonna throw away for the sake of making people feel comfortable?' So, yes, that was a huge thing. Once we decided to do it, we went for it.

While Chadwick Boseman did have to do some fighting to get his T'Challa accent on screen, it all worked out. And, he gave props in his interview to everyone who listened to his passionate opinion and decided to take his advice and go all-in with it, even when they still had doubts. Seeing as how Black Panther now stands as 2018's highest grossing movie domestically and one of the year's top 10 reviewed films, everyone can tell that he was right.

Black Panther is now available on home video and streaming, and Chadwick Boseman is expected to be seen next as the famed character in Avengers 4, which is due out in April 2019. Until then, be sure to check out our 2018 movie release schedule to see what you can watch through the end of this year.
