Shazam! Made A Major Change To Billy's Parents And It Really Worked

Warning: SPOILERS for Shazam! are ahead!

Lost parents are a common trope when it comes to superhero storytelling, particularly in the DC universe. Occasionally lost is literal, but more often than not its figurative, with the mother and/or father being deceased. Billy Batson is among the many DC superheroes who has lost his parents, although depending on the continuity, theyre either killed (usually the case) or are indeed missing. Shazam! took the latter approach, although it applied a unique twist that did a wonderful job reinforcing the family isnt blood theme.

After kicking off with showing us the adolescent Thaddeus Sivana being brought to Rock of Eternity in 1974 and failing to be selected as the wizard Shazams new champion, Shazam! flashed forward to show us Billy Batson as a small child attending a carnival with his mother, Rachel. Billys mother was trying to win Billy a stuffed tiger at a balloon-popping game, and while she didnt succeed in doing so, she did win him a compass, which she told him he could use to find his way home.

Unfortunately (and ironically) for Billy, he was soon after separated from Rachel at the carnival. In the years following he bounced throughout the foster care system, never staying too long at a home, no matter how loving the family was, because he was determined to find his mother. Billy failed to accomplish this one his own, but luckily for him, one of the members of his latest foster family, Eugene, is a computer whiz kid, and he not only tracked down where Billys mother was currently living, but also discovered that her real name is Marilyn, just like in the comics.

Youd think that a reunion between mother and son would be a happy occasion, but as Billy learned upon arriving at his mothers apartment, she didnt reciprocate his excitement. It turned out that Marilyn did track down Billy at the fair after briefly losing him, but when she saw him being cared after by police officers, she decided he was better off being looked after by another family. Apparently our previous look at Billy and Marilyn together had been filtered through Billys romanticized memory, and Marilyn was actually having a difficult time caring for her son as a single parent. Oh yeah, I forgot to mention, Billys dad, C.C., is in prison.

Learning that your mother abandoned you is bad enough, but sinking the knife in further, Marilyn also told Billy that now wasnt a good time for her to begin forming a new relationship with him, and assumed that he was doing just fine with whatever family he was living with. Understandably shocked and disappointed with how this reunion turned out, Billy handed his mother the compass shed given him years back and returned home, at which point he returned home, gave his adoptive siblings superpowers, defeated a glowing-eyed maniac and realized he finally had found his true family. Yay, there was a happy ending for the kid after all!

When youre making a comic book adaptation, its obviously necessary to take creative liberties in order for the story to flow smoothly within a cinematic framework. Every now and then, one of these changes ends up being better than what was originally depicted on the printed page, and with the kind of story Shazam! was telling, it was a better call to simply not have Billys parents in his life as opposed to them being dead or their whereabouts being a big mystery needing to be solved.

For those unfamiliar with the Shazam mythos, in the various pre-Flashpoint continuity stories, C.C. and Marilyn Batson usually due while traveling, with Billy being forced to live with his cruel uncle Ebenezer until being tossed onto the street. In the graphic novel The Power of Shazam!, Billys parents were archaeologists killed by Theo Adam, descendant of Black Adam, while on a dig in Egypt. In the New 52 universe, its never specified what happened to C.C. and Marilyn, although in the current Shazam comic book, Billys father has returned to reunite with his son. Whether this is the real C.C. or an impostor has not yet been revealed.

Regardless, had Shazam! gone the route of having Billys parents be dead/gone tied to some kind of conspiracy, similar to what was done was done with Peter Parkers parents in the Amazing Spider-Man movies, would have been a mistake. Shazam! was about how people dont need to be biologically related in order to be a family. Billy spent so much time looking for his mother that he didnt open himself to the possibility that he could find love elsewhere in his life. With the Vasquezs, hes finally found that home and sense of belonging that he wanted.

There are more than enough Shazam stories from nearly 80 years to provide material for more Shazam! movies; a big mystery surrounding Billys parents didnt need to be one of them. And while it may seem ridiculous commenting on realism in a movie about a boy who turns into an adult superhero by saying a magic word, it was a novel and logical idea to have Billys mom not caring for him because she didnt want to. As heartbreaking as it is, there are people who have just been abandoned by their parents for selfish reasons, and by taking this approach, Asher Angels Billy becomes a more relatable character.

Its also worth mentioning that this family isnt blood idea extends particularly well to one of Billy Batsons siblings, Mary Bromfield. Before The New 52, Mary was Billys biological sister, reuniting with her brother years after their parents died. However, like in the New 52, Shazam!s versions of Billy and Mary are not related by blood, but by the end of the movie they finally form that brother/sister bond and still get to be superheroes with their other siblings. Its a win-win.

Its possible Billy Batsons biological parents could factor into future Shazam! movies. Maybe Marilyn will change her mind and decide she does want to build a relationship with Billy, and/or maybe his father will be freed from prison and decides to seek out Billy. But even if this does happen, Billy already has a family who loves and cares about him. These people care about him and have his back, and vice versa. And especially with his siblings, there wont be any lack of excitement in their lives going forward.

Wait, MoviePass Wants To Get Into Making Movies?

Wait, MoviePass Wants To Get Into Making Movies?

MoviePass has already had a profound impact on the movie industry in the way it has changed the game for ticket sales. However, it now appears the company wants in on the other end of the process, making movies themselves. It's being reported that MoviePass parent company Helios and Matheson Analytics currently has the exclusive option to buy Emmett Furla Oasis Films.

Emmett Furla Oasis Films is the studio behind films like the Mark Wahlberg led Lone Survivor and Martin Scorsese's Silence. The deal, which has yet to actually be completed, would give Helios and Matheson Analytics ownership of EFO's film library as well as its current production slate. The goal, according to Variety, is for Helios and Matheson to use this as a way to launch its own production company. EFO Films founders Randall Emmett and George Furla would act as co-CEO's of the new studio.

MoviePass has been a rollercoaster ride over the last several months. After initially dropping the price of its movie ticket subscription service to only $9.95 a month, the company saw it's subscriber base increase by an order of magnitude. It became one of the biggest names in the industry. However, the reduced price raised questions about MoviePass' ability to turn a profit, and recently investors have clearly been concerned about the company, as the stock value of Helios and Matheson has dropped significantly in recent weeks.

Purchasing EFO Films wouldn't be MoviePass' first foray into that side of the industry. The company is already working on the distribution of two movies in June, American Animals and the organized crime biopic Gotti with John Travolta in the lead role. Gotti was produced by EFO, which appears to be where the two companies began talking.

Clearly, this move shows that MoviePass has big plans for its own future beyond being a simple subscription service for movie theater tickets. It has its eye on the entire industry. Between movie production on one end and ticket sales on the other MoviePass would be part of the beginning and the end of a film's entire lifespan. This is a pretty drastic shift. Helios and Matheson Analytics is primarily a data company and while owning MoviePass makes sense in that regard, being part of a movie studio makes it look like the parent company might be making a shift in focus.

It will be interesting to see how the rest of the industry responds to this deal if it goes through. MoviePass has had an ongoing feud of sorts with AMC Theaters ever since the price of the service dropped. One has to wonder if other studios will take an equally dim view of the company getting involved in the production side. The other question is whether this acquisition will instill confidence in the company enough to cause the stock price to rebound.

Steven Spielberg Is Making A DC Comics Movie, And We're Not Joking

Steven Spielberg Is Making A DC Comics Movie, And We're Not Joking

If you're a movie fan in any form or fashion, then not only are you familiar with Steven Spielberg, you probably enjoy at least a few of his cinematic contributions. In fact, if it wasn't for Jaws, then we wouldn't have the modern blockbuster. But in recent years, as the superhero movie genre has soared in popularity, occasionally the question has risen if Spielberg would direct such a movie, and now it looks like the answer is a resounding yes. This is not a joke: Spielberg has been tapped to make a Blackhawk movie for DC.

Through his production company Amblin Entertainment, Steven Spielberg is already confirmed to produce Blackhawk, but as THR reports, the movie is being developed as a "directing vehicle" for him. David Koepp, who previously worked with Spielberg on the first two Jurassic Park movies, War of the Worlds and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, is writing the script. However, before you get too excited, don't expect Blackhawk to be Spielberg's next movie. The director already has Indiana Jones 5 lined up, and after that, he's planning on tackling the West Side Story remake, so it'll be a while before Blackhawk gets off the ground.

In case you're not familiar with Blackhawk, it was one of the earliest properties that would make up what would eventually comprise the DC Comics universe. Introduced in 1941's Military Comics #1, Blackhawk was a mysterious pilot known only by that moniker, and leading a squadron of pilots known collectively as the Blackhawks, they battled Nazi forces in the skies during World War II. The Blackhawk characters are primarily associated with this time period, although during the New 52 reboot, the team was operating in the modern day as an elite covert military unit tasked with battling a terrorist group called Mother Machine. Outside of the comics, Blackhawk was a 15-part film serial in the early 1950s, and the characters also popped up in the animated Justice League series. Both Arrow and The Flash have also featured a company called Blackhawk Security.

Steven Spielberg has directed a variety of blockbusters over the decades, but this marks his first venture into comic book-related cinematic territory. However, rather than go the traditional superhero movie route, Blackhawk feels more in line with Spielberg's body of work, as he's previously directed World War II-set movies 1941, Schindler's List and Saving Private Ryan, not to mention similarly adventurous fare like the Indiana Jones movies. It's unclear if the Blackhawk movie will be set in the DC Extended Universe or if it will be self-contained, like Todd Phillips' Joker movie. If it does take place in the DCEU, like last year's Wonder Woman, it would provide an interesting peek into what this version of Earth was like long before superheroes stepped into the spotlight.

Keep checking back with CinemaBlend for more news on how Blackhawk is progressing, but in the meantime, you can learn what other DC Comics movie are in the works with our handy guide.

Gene Wilder Reportedly Wanted To Be Remembered More For Young Frankenstein Than Willy Wonka

Gene Wilder Reportedly Wanted To Be Remembered More For Young Frankenstein Than Willy Wonka

Upon his passing in the summer of 2016, legendary actor Gene Wilder was remembered as a powerhouse of charm, earnestness, and comedic timing. And even when you have a career as prolific and memorable as he did, there are still some roles that'll be remembered more than others. For Wilder, his role as the titular confectionary genius in Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory was one that shone above most of his other credits, which was something the man himself foresaw. Which is a shame, because while that role was indeed a classic, the film he really wanted to be remembered for was Mel Brooks' Young Frankenstein.

This fact was brought up during an interview with Woman's World, in which Gene Wilder biographer Brian Scott Mednick mentioned one particular interview where Wilder made this fact well known. Mednick recalled this as follows:

He gave an interview once where he said he did not want his gravestone to say, 'Here lies Willy Wonka,' yet ironically he did not have much choice about his legacy. When he died, all the news outlets highlighted his role as Willy Wonka above everything else. Gene wanted to be most remembered for [1974's] Young Frankenstein.

Part of the reason that Gene Wilder was probably better remembered for playing Wonka in Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory when he died is the fact that a lot of the people who grew up with that film in its initial release are now adults who not only hold that film as a strong, memorable experience from childhood, but also went on to pass those memories to their children through that very same film. Yet that truth does sting a bit when thinking back to the fact that Young Frankenstein was more than just a role which Gene Wilder truly loved, it was also a symbol of him finally making it big in Hollywood.

Wilder not only starred in the film as the reluctant grandson of the original Dr. Frankenstein, but he also co-wrote the film with director Mel Brooks after they'd discussed the idea during the production of Blazing Saddles. Operating as Gene Wilder's first success as a screenwriter, and a continued success as a Hollywood actor, the horror-comedy classic was a benchmark for the man's career. But, while Young Frankenstein is still very much a popular film, its appeal is obviously limited to fans of high-brow homage. Meanwhile, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory was further proof that family friendly blockbusters tend to make a wider impact than most other genres, even if it takes a while for the film in question to catch on.

When it comes to actors who were afraid of iconic roles dwarfing their legacies, Gene Wilder certainly wasn't alone. Sir Alec Guinness never wanted to be remembered as Obi Wan Kenobi from Star Wars. Richard Harris almost didn't take the role of Dumbledore in Harry Potter, because he knew it would be the most popular credit to be mentioned once he passed. But, while the newscasts may have been full of clips from Wilder's career, set to the tune of "Pure Imagination," you can bet there were still legions of fans quoting their favorite lines from Young Frankenstein right alongside them.

Gene wanted to be most remembered for [1974's] 'Young Frankenstein.'" That comedic black-and-white film, which paid tribute to the look of Boris Karloff's 1931 horror flick "Frankenstein," explored how the American grandson of the infamous scientist struggled to prove that his grandfather wasn't as insane as people believed.
