The Meg Director Says The Movie Keeps Getting Compared To Jurassic Park

A prehistoric beast will emerge from the depths this weekend when Jon Turtletaub's The Meg premieres in theaters. The film takes many tropes of the shark movie genre and dials them up to eleven by increasing the size and scale of the creature, but it also has many fans drawing comparisons to other, non-shark monster movies. In a recent interview, Turtletaub opened up, and admitted that many have compared The Meg to Jurassic Park because of its focus on a prehistoric animal roaming around in the modern era. The director explained:

A lot of people compare the movie to Jaws and Jurassic Park, yet no one has ever compared me to Steven Spielberg, so I have no idea what this means. Jurassic Park was so interesting because it's a time-travel movie where the people don't travel through time, the monster does, and that's the same story here.

In terms of the bare bones skeletons of the stories, Jon Turtletaub's remarks to THR actually make quite a bit of sense. While their broader stories are different, The Meg and Jurassic Park do both tell very similar tales of dinosaurs emerging in a new time period to feast on human prey. There are obviously a number of differences that prevent one from feeling like a carbon copy of the other, but that core DNA does arguably make them the "same story" in the director's eyes.

With that said, there are plenty of other films that seem to share similarities with The Meg as well. One clear option is the aforementioned Jaws, as well as other shark movies like Deep Blue Sea, 47 Meters Down, and The Shallows. With only a few days to go until The Meg finally premieres, we will just have to wait and see how Jon Turtletaub and his cast break new ground on the shark genre and do something unique with this awesome monster.

The Meg centers on a group of scientists and ocean explorers who encounter an enormous Megalodon during an excursion to the bottom of the sea. Newly awakened after millennia of presumed extinction, the shark goes on a rampage through the Pacific Ocean, leaving disgraced and foul-mouthed rescue diver Jonas Taylor (Jason Statham) to take it down. The film is based on a sci-fi novel by Steve Alten, not unlike the original Jurassic Park, which was similarly based on a sci-fi novel written by the late Michael Crichton.

The Megalodon will return to the shallows to eat some modern day prey this weekend when The Meg premieres on the big screen on August 10. Watch out for this summer's biggest shark movie when it debuts, and head over to our movie premiere guide to read up on everything else that's going to premiere this year!

Why Detective Pikachu Doesnt Star Ash Ketchum

Why Detective Pikachu Doesnt Star Ash Ketchum

After decades of gaming, trading cards, and anime, a live-action Pokemon movie is finally in the works. And while the generations of Pokemon fans are feeling especially nostalgic, there will be one classic figure missing when Pikachu takes center stage, voiced by Ryan Reynolds. And that's Pokemon Trainer Ash Ketchum, who is the star of the very popular and still running cartoon series. Ash and Pikachu are inseparable, but Detective Pikachu will star Justice Smith (Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom) as Pikachu's trainer Tim. Director Rob Letterman recently spoke to this choice, revealing the thought behind pivoting to a new human character in this story.

The Pokemon Company, they've already made many, many movies of Ash, and they came to Legendary with this idea of using a new character. So when I came onboard, I was pitched this character of Detective Pikachu, and I fell in love with the story behind it. It's a really great story. It was something with a lot of heart, and it was just very unique. And because there's already been so much work done with Ash, for the first live-action movie I thought it was a really good idea to try something new with a new character, but bake it into the universe of Pokemon. So it still follows all the rules, and we get to see a lot of our favorite things.

Well, that certainly clears things up. While some Pokemon fans are going to be sad that Pallet Town's favorite hero isn't going to translated into live-action alongside his Pokemon partner, Detective Pikachu will offer something brand new to the fandom. Pikachu is already going to talk, so it's clear that the upcoming blockbuster is playing by its own set of rules.

Rob Letterman's comments come from his appearance Pokemon World Championships (via IGN), and will likely help answers some of the many questions currently surrounding Detective Pikachu. Legendary pictures and everyone involved has been keeping their cards close to the chest. The movie has already done its primary filming, and is currently in post-production. This likely includes plenty of voice work for Ryan Reynolds, who wasn't on set with Justice Smith and the rest of the Detective Pikachu cast.

Detective Pikachu will mark the first live-action Pokemon movie, something decades in the making. While there have been a whopping 21 animated Pokemon movies made throughout the years-- usually 3-4 to go with each generation of the popular video game. But the iconic monsters have never been translated into live-action, so it will be a highly anticipated event to see Pikachu in the real world, and battling alongside favorites like Charizard or Squirtle.

We'll get to see all of the Pokemon in the flesh when Detective Pikachu arrives in theaters on May 10, 2019. In the meantime, check out our 2018 release list to plan your next trip to the movies.

The Rock And Jason Statham's Furious Spinoff Landed The Perfect Director

The Rock And Jason Statham's Furious Spinoff Landed The Perfect Director

Dwayne Johnson's Luke Hobbs and Jason Statham's Deckard Shaw were adversaries during Furious 7, and their feud continued into The Fate of the Furious, but as that latter movie chugged along, the two found themselves working together to bring down Charlize Theron's Cipher. Rather than keep their dynamic going in another of the main Fast and the Furious movies, Universal gave the green light to a spinoff movie starring Hobbs and Shaw, which is reportedly being called... well, Hobbs and Shaw, and now it's official: Deadpool 2 director David Leitch will helm that spinoff.

It was reported back in early February that David Leitch was in early talks to direct Hobbs and Shaw, and today EW confirmed that Leitch has officially signed on to the movie. David Leitch spent years in Hollywood as a stuntman/stunt coordinator, but he kicked off his directing career with 2014's John Wick, which he co-helmed with Chad Stahelski. Leitch followed up with Atomic Blonde and next month's Deadpool 2, making Hobbs and Shaw his fourth movie on his directorial resume. He will be working off a script written by Chris Morgan, who has penned all of the Fast and the Furious movies since 2006's Tokyo Drift.

The Fast and the Furious franchise has changed quite a bit since it launched in 2001, morphing into movies revolving around street races and heists to its protagonists now often working to save the world. But along with cars, one of the constants in this film series has been action, and with Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham being the stars of Hobbs and Shaw, you need to double down on that particular element. Hiring David Leitch as director is a good step towards ensuring that happens, as he has plenty of experience with stunt-driven action both in front of and behind the camera. While it's reasonable to assume that driving/racing will still factor into this spinoff, given that Luke Hobbs and Deckard Shaw are two of the best fighters among the main Fast and the Furious characters, one would imagine that means there will be even more throwing down of fisticuffs compared to the main series entries.

No plot details for Hobbs and Shaw have been revealed yet, though as with the previous movies, you can count on the spinoff being packed with craziness. When we last saw these two in The Fate of the Furious, they were celebrating with Dom Toretto and the rest of the crew in having successfully Dom's kid and stopped Cipher's plans. However, Cipher eluded capture, so perhaps the spinoff will see Hobbs and Shaw tracking her down, though I suspect there isn't a shortage of other baddies for them to take on.

Hobbs and Shaw will race into theaters on July 26, 2019, and so far has no competition that opening weekend, though that will change eventually. Keep checking back with CinemaBlend for more updates about the Fast and the Furious spinoff and the franchise as a whole, and be sure to look through our 2018 release guide to learn what movies are coming out later this year.
