Emily Blunt Needed To Be Written Out Of Sicario 2 Because She Was A Moral Compass

The following contains minor spoilers for Sicario: Day of the Soldado.

The original Sicario was a much-celebrated thriller and a large part of the film's success was due to the work of Emily Blunt. This made the fact that Blunt doesn't appear in Sicario: Day of the Soldado a problem for many. However, Soldado director Stefano Sollima explains that there's a very good reason why Blunt had to be written out of the sequel. Blunt's character of FBI agent Kate Macy was the moral center of the first film, and the sequel simply doesn't have a moral center. According to Sollima...

Emily Blunt is an amazing actress, but her role was sort of a moral guidance for the audience. In Soldado, we don't have that. This is closer to my vision of storytelling. I prefer not to have a moral guidance for the audience.

In Sicario, Emily Blunt's character was enlisted by the U.S. government in an attempt to take down the head of a major drug cartel in Mexico. However, it's clear from the beginning that she doesn't know everything about what is happening and the more she learns the more she realizes the characters played by Josh Brolin and Benicio del Toro aren't going to let things like morality, or law, stand in the way of completing the mission they've come to do.

Sicario: Day of the Soldado pretty much picks up where these ideas leave off. Josh Brolin's character is sent into Mexico by the U.S. government to start a war between drug cartels and the methods he uses to accomplish the goal are the sorts of things no government would ever admit to. The fact is that you can't have Emily Blunt's character return in a movie like Soldado, because if she was there she would either blow the lid off the entire operation or, based on how the first film ended, get killed trying.

Of course, the other problem is that, as screenwriter Taylor Sheridan had previously explained, Emily Blunt's character went through a complete arc in the first Sicario. There's really no reason to bring her back as there's just nothing the character needs to accomplish. She's also already been through hell once. What audience would want to watch her, and by extension, us, go through that again?

Of course, sometimes the story you have to tell is about amoral people doing amoral things and a moral guidance character simply has no place. Soldado is just that sort of movie. It's hard to argue that any character in the film is a "good" person, and Stefano Sollima tells Business Insider he doesn't think a moral center is necessary, but that doesn't mean the movie doesn't have a story to tell or a point to make. Although, Soldado isn't being embraced by the audience quite as well as the first film, so maybe a moral compass isn't a bad thing.

How At Eternitys Gate Will Change Your Vision Of Vincent Van Gogh, According To Willem Dafoe

When most people think about the life of Vincent Van Gogh, they don't exactly conjure positive images. Part of the legendary artist's legacy is the fact that his work was widely disregarded in his time, and after dying a poor man his paintings became recognized as some of the greatest art ever put to canvas. It's a part of the story recognized in Julian Schnabel's new Van Gogh biopic, At Eternity's Gate, but there's much more to the tale than the base trivia. As star Willem Dafoe points out, it's also eye-opening just how prolific the man was during the final years of his life:

In the period that we deal with he was so productive, it kind of shatters the idea of him as the poor tortured artist. Ears cutting off and all that thrown into the mix, but he was on fire. He was creating... I don't remember how many paintings - like a painting every day. And of course he had lots of challenges, but he was in touch with the thing that he wanted to do. He was awake and that's what we all aspire to do.

Willem Dafoe delivers one of the best performances of his career in At Eternity's Gate, and I had the opportunity to discuss the project with him earlier this month during the film's Los Angeles press junket. During the interview I noted the general perception of Vincent Van Gogh -- a simultaneously tragic and renowned figure in the annals of history -- and asked how the actor's perception of him changed after his performance. The big thing he accentuated was just how productive he was, not only churning out hundreds of pieces, but also physically painting them all with great speed.

Based on a script by Jean-Claude Carrire, Louise Kugelberg, and Julian Schnabel, At Eternity's Gate depicts the life of Vincent Van Gogh in the last few years of his life, from 1888 to 1890. It was at this time that he moved from living with his brother to the small city of Arles in the south of France. It was during this time that produced some of his most famous and beautiful works, including the Night Cafe, Bedroom in Arles, Self-portrait with Bandaged Ear, and The Starry Night. However, while he was doing the greatest work of his career it was a period that also saw him suffer tremendously due to his mental illness, and suffer multiple incarcerations in psychiatric hospitals.

At Eternity's Gate and Willem Dafoe's performance are vivid in their depiction of Vincent Van Gogh's serious psychological issues, but also beautifully celebrate the man's incredible contribution to the art world. Not only does the narrative witness the creation many of his most incredible paintings, but also brings them to life through remarkable set design and cinematography. It's a fantastic piece of work, and a tremendous tribute.

Late Term Abortion Movie Making Money Despite Theaters Dropping It

Moviemaking may be largely about the writing, filming, and editing processes, there's a major aspect of the film industry that casual fans often don't think of: its release. There's negotiation between studios and theaters, where the amount of showings is determined before each new release arrives. This process is what gets movies in theaters, although controversial independent drama Gosnell is having a hard time keeping showings-- although that's not stopping it from making money.

Gosnell is an indie film starring Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman actor Dean Cain. After crowdfunding helped the movie get made, there are tons of theaters that are reportedly turning the edgy drama down. Despite showing in just 480 theaters, the movie managed to accrue an impressive $2,004,734 in box office sales over its first two weekends.

While $2 million is chump change compared to massive blockbusters like Star Wars or superhero movies, it's a pretty substantial hall for such a small indie movie-- especially considering that it's being shown in so few theaters. Gosnell was made on a budget of $4 million, which was accrued through the use of crowdfunding. While many indie flicks don't end up recouping their investment, it certainly seems like Gosnell may be able to do just that.

Gosnell producer and marketing director John Sullivan recently spoke to Daily Wire about being dropped, and he seems shocked that so many theaters are turning their backs on the movie. As he tells it,

I can tell you from my experience in 15 years of releasing movies independently, we're in uncharted territories. It is an impacted fall, no doubt about it, but the fact that we've been dropped from theaters where the movie is the number 6 or number 9 movie is just something you don't see. We have theaters that are dropping that are top theaters, that are performing very well. We've been the number 6 in a 15-plex and it gets dropped this week. We've been number 9 in a 30-plex and we're getting dropped this week. There are about 15 theaters like that where typically you would not get dropped.

It's not totally clear why so many theaters and chains have decided to drop Gosnell, although the film's somewhat controversial subject matter seems like a good guess. It's not easy to sell a movie about illegal late-term abortions, yet here we are. And it's based off a true story.

Gosnell follows the investigation, trial, and eventual conviction of infamous abortion doctor Kermit Gosnell. Gosnell performed illegal late-term abortions in the early 2000s, and was eventually charged with murder and manslaughter after killing his patients and their newborn children.

Gosnell is in select theaters now, although it may be hard to find a screening, depending on your location. In the meantime, check out our 2019 release list to plan your trips to the movies in the New Year.

Finally, I would also look at trimming out as many of those annoying Porg scenes as possible, especially when Chewie is flying the Falcon later in the film. As it stands, this is the definitive edition of the Last Jedi and the only one I would consider ever watching again. Props for the effort!
