How Another Evil Dead Movie Could Happen, According To Bruce Campbell

There is nothing quite like Ash vs Evil Dead on TV right now. The horror comedy has taken both the Ash character and the vision of the franchise glimpsed in Army of Darkness to the nth degree on Starz, with the showing having just began its third season. But just because Ash is currently doling out quips while killing demons on the small screen, doesn't mean that the Evil Dead franchise will never return to the theater. In fact, much of what the future holds for Evil Dead depends on the future of the TV show, as Ash himself, Bruce Campbell, explained:

We're going to see what the TV gods have in store for us. We're ready either way. If they take us off the air, we can think about another movie. And if they don't, we can just keep plugging away.

If that quote makes the future seem somewhat uncertain, that's because it is. As Bruce Campbell told Entertainment Weekly, Ash vs Evil Dead is currently waiting on a Season 4 renewal to be decided in March, so things are in limbo at the moment. Obviously if the show is cancelled, for the Evil Dead story to continue, it would have to find another platform, and perhaps returning to the big screen would be an option depending on demand and financing. But so long as the show is on the air, there is really no reason for an Evil Dead movie, at least not one in the current timeline and featuring the Ash character.

I'm sure the die hard Evil Dead fans out there wouldn't object to another movie, but I honestly can't think what a movie would bring to the table that the show isn't already delivering. Ash vs Evil Dead is wild and hilarious, and delivers all the scares, thrills and gore you could ever want from this franchise. There isn't much horror comedy out there as there probably should be, and the television format seems perfectly suited to the Evil Dead story. What the show achieves on a TV budget is remarkable; the practical effects and ridiculous gore are only matched by Bruce Campbell as Ash, delivering humor and violence in equal doses. If the show is cancelled, there would have to be something compelling and new to justify the franchise's return to the big screen, simply because of how much it has been able to achieve on the small screen.

The evolution of the Evil Dead franchise is one of the more interesting in the horror genre. The original 1981 film was a straight-up horror flick that gave way to a sequel with comedic elements. Then 1992's Army of Darkness really embraced the Ash character and went full on horror comedy. Fede Alvarez's 2013 remake of the original played things straight and didn't feature Ash or the comedy the franchise was destined for. Bruce Campbell returned to the franchise for Ash vs Evil Dead. There, in the TV realm, is where I feel the franchise has truly realized its own potential and leaned into its own ridiculousness. This is largely thanks to the brilliance of Bruce Campbell as Ash, the role he was born to play.

Selma Blair Quits Twitter In Solidarity With James Gunn After Firing

It's been more than a week since Disney ultimately opted to let Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 director James Gunn go after old tweets he published resurfaced. In the time since, a lot of people who have spent ample time with Gunn in Hollywood have come to the director's defense. One of those people was Selma Blair, who came to Gunn's defense once before ultimately opting to shed her Twitter account completely. In her final tweet the actress said:

James Gunn has been a consistent topic of conversation ever since old tweets were unearthed of Gunn's featuring both rape and pedophilia jokes from years before. At the time the tweets were a hot topic, Disney severed its relationship with the director and James Gunn even came out to explain that he understood the decision. He also explained to fans that he used to be a little more aggressive with shock comedy, but that his recent career path -- and some therapy -- had helped him to become a different person in recent years.

James Gunn handled his firing about as well as he possibly could given the circumstances and a lot of people who have worked with the director have come out in his defense. Particularly, Dave Bautista has been vocal with his thoughts following Gunn's removal from the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Nothing more has been said about the upcoming movie in the time since, and a new director has not been hired by Disney yet. Following the unearthing of Gunn's former tweets, a slew of other people in Hollywood have also deleted social media. Star Wars: The Last Jedi director deleted 20,000 tweets and Nightwing's Chris McKay also got rid of his Twitter account. Selma Blair just joined that party, although as she mentions, her Instagram is still intact.

Previously, Selma Blair had this to say about James Gunn:

If people are punished despite changing, then what does that teach people about owning mistakes and evolving? This man is one of the good ones.

At this point, one would assume Disney would be unlikely to renege on its firing decision, which means the real concern is whether or not Disney will even make a third Guardians movie. James Gunn had already completed the script before his firing and the movie is scheduled to be released in 2020, but a lot is still up in the air at this point. We'll be see to keep you updated as the status of the third movie in the series changes. In the meantime, the Guardians of the Galaxy -- or what's left of them -- are expected to appear in the upcoming Avengers 4, set to hit theaters on May 3, 2019.

Many of the great superheroes have an arch-nemesis, and while some may argue that Black Adam fills that role for Shazam, the fact of the matter is that Doctor Thaddeus Sivana is an equally worthy candidate, if not more so given that he debuted in Whiz Comics #2, the same comic book that introduced the hero previously known as Captain Marvel. So when it was revealed that Black Adam was no longer appearing in the Shazam! movie, many fans suspected that Doctor Sivana would fill in as the main antagonist, and sure enough, it was confirmed in January that Mark Strong was playing the character. The Shazam! trailer gave us a brief glimpse of Strong's Sivana, showing us that he physically looks more formidable than traditionally depicted in the comics. Shazam! is also making some adjustments to Sivana's backstory as well, as this version of the villain met the mysterious Wizard that gives Billy Batson his powers.

Just like in the comics, Billy Batson will be selected by the Wizard in Shazam! to inherit his powers and become his new champion. But it turns out that Mark Strong's Sivana also encountered the Wizard (also named Shazam) as a kid, but he was rejected from receiving those amazing abilities. In the years since, Sivana has been trying to gain powers like the one Billy now has so he can finally live up to the expectations of his "domineering father." Since Sivana was able to block one of Shazam's mighty punches in the trailer, clearly he's somehow accomplished this goal. Shazam! director David F. Sandberg also told EW the following about Shazam!'s Sivana:

Mark Strong loves being a bad guy. And it's not just him, really, it's ... something else ... that lent him his powers ... he can do some things that Shazam can't. The danger in some films is the bad guy has the same powers as the good guy. [Sivana] has an extra thing, extra dynamic, that takes care of that...

Although Shazam! is pulling from various eras of the character's nearly eight-decade history, the overall story looks to be very much inspired by the Shazam New 52 origin story, and Sivana is no exception. As you can see above, one of Sivana's eyes is whited out, which calls back to when the New 52 Sivana gained the ability to see magic. However, in the comics that came as a result of trying to open Black Adam's tomb, and Black Adam will not appear in Shazam!. So where could Mark Strong's Sivana have obtained his powers? My guess is from the Seven Deadly Enemies of Man, demons that are the physical embodiments of Christianity's seven deadly sins (Pride, Envy, Greed, Anger, Sloth, Gluttony and Lust). They've been part of the Shazam mythology for decades and, like Sivana and Black Adam, were involved in the New 52 origin story. Perhaps in Shazam!, the Enemies are trapped and have given Sivana some powers in exchange for working to free them. Sivana thinks once he's done that, he'll become godlike, but in the end, the Enemies betray him and instead just try to wreak havoc and corrupt as many humans as possible around the world.
